Online sources claim there was an arch on the West Cliff pre-1964 (apparently installed in 1854). This isn't true, but plenty of whalebones decorated buildings, the last relics of Whitby whaling. Frank Meadows Sutcliffe photographed a whalebone shed, later broken up and installed in Pannet Park.
