Mr. Panofsky shoots, he scores!
You know, I don't get why everybody wants to keep talking about all this Epstein stuff. I was almost killed by an escalator.

Philip Pearlstein's portrait (1967) is of the art historian Erwin Panofsky. A hero of mine, it is worth reading his essay on Michelangelo; it is as if he was the only artist in the world, and as if Panofsky were the only person to have seen his work.

I have co-authored one (1) translation. It was some of the hardest work I've ever done, and my co-author and I read the publications and letters by Panofsky in order to decide how to translate single words alone. From the intro to our translation. www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/epdf/10....

Dr. Phillips made multiple contributions to physics. She developed the Oppenheimer-Phillips process, which help explains certain types of nuclear reactions. While she was blacklisted, she wrote a widely used textbook on electromagnetism with German Jewish physicist and refugee W. Panofsky.

2/2 John devours the book, from Albrecht Dürer's Apocalypse, 1498. Marvelous masterpiece of visionary experience conveyed by the abstraction of woodcut. h/t Panofsky, who is still the best!

Every time I think I’m reasonably well versed on women in the history of science I learn of someone new to me! I have Panofsky-Phillips on my office shelf.

Panofsky’s name is recognizable to anyone who has ever applied for a postdoc in particle physics at SLAC because the Panofsky Fellowship is a prestigious opportunity. Phillips is not similarly memorialized in American physics, despite her simultaneous political and scientific significance.

@stuartelden.bsky.social is a master of the illuminating microstories of intellectual history; this one on how Bourdieu's translation of Panofsky shaped his and contemporary French thinking is a gem
