He flew Beaufighters and Mosquitoes on ground attack missions against the Japanese and received the DFC. Becoming ‘deskbound’ again in August 1944, he itched for any flying opportunities. This was how he came to be an ‘observer’ on board the 355 Squadron Liberator in which he lost his life.
