New Article: "Molecular regulation and domestication of parthenocarpy in cucumber" rdcu.be/d6qTw

NPF1 governs parthenocarpy by activating YUC4 expression in ovules. Mutations in NPF1 and YUC4 promoter led to parthenocarpic fruit during cucumber domestication.

(Don’t judge me but I should never miss the opportunity of showing botanical facts) the word of the day is parthenocarpy - the process of fruit forming without fertilization. 🫑

Concha Gómez-Mena from @ibmcp.bsky.social closes the first day session at the #SOLRUB2025. She talks about #parthenocarpy in tomatoes. There are three types of parthenocarpy described. She focused in the mechanism produced by the anthers (male-sterile mutants).

One of the most significant developments in banana domestication was the emergence of parthenocarpy, a trait that allows fruit to develop without fertilization. Over time, farmers selectively propagated plants that naturally exhibited parthenocarpy, leading to the development of seedless bananas.

Bananas reproduce through a natural process called parthenocarpy, which allows them to develop fruit without pollination or seeds. Unlike wild bananas that have large seeds, commercial varieties like the Cavendish are seedless, making them easier to eat and grow.

An analysis of fruit trait evolution in cucumbers shows how an APETALA2 (AP2)-like transcription factor regulates both parthenocarpy and bitterness.

🧪The fun thing about writing for the Life's Little Mysteries column at Live Science is I get to ask scientists all my weird shower thoughts.
How do plants with seedless fruit reproduce?
Plants are capable of producing seedless fruit through a process called parthenocarpy, and humans have long leveraged it in agriculture.

Is that like an embedded second tomato?? Some weird genetic hiccup with that batch of seed? In peppers when you get that baby pepper inside the other pepper it's "parthenocarpy" or the formation of fruit without fertilization (had to look that up).
