Wondering if a bit like Boris and partygate, we are reaching the point of "None of this matters until suddenly all of it does".

Bailey was also involved in partygate. I was furious when he got a peerage.

British multiculturalism - day to day, on the ground - is a successful experiment. The UK enjoys a shared set of political facts, as represented by the non-tribal backlash over Partygate/Truss. The British obsession with irony & suspicion of sincerity provides some protection against demagoguery.
So,as a little thought-experiment, tell me something about the United Kingdom that works well and is actually quite impressive. I am not trying to sound like some boosterish politician. I just genuinely believe that making people believe that all is lost is a convenient pretext for shady characters.

It has the potential to be if it brings down Starmer and draws others in. I'd say expenses and partygate were, so far, more consequential.
The ‘worst political scandal of this century’ is quite the claim. In my usual helpful manner, I shall help to explain why I think this is very possibly true via the media of synecdoche and the proverbial sausage.
Had forgotten until reading @duncanrobinson.bsky.social’s peerless column that Peter Mandelson once publicly said Keir Starmer was too fat.

On anti-corruption day, we’re sharing a trio of past articles highlighting the issue. First up - a reminder of the Partygate scandal from Claire Jones: westenglandbylines.co.uk/politics/par...
Partygate – a betrayal of trust
Partygate shows Johnson‘s arrogant disregard for the sacrifices we all made because of Covid and is a betrayal of trust.

Partygate destroyed trust.

Making it so much harder for the government to manage future health crises.

And Kemi Badenoch claims the scandal was “overblown”. Right.
November 4, 2024 at 3:45 PM
Badenoch tells Laura Kuenssberg that Johnson was a great prime minister, that partygate was “overblown” and that it was the rules that were the problem.
Lessons learned - 0
Arrogance - off the scale.

You think partygate was overblown, I’m afraid you have completely lost touch with the British public who stuck diligently to the rules that the Conservative government made.

The party has never got over Partygate and also never processed why it mattered as a scandal.

So they are desperate to confect a parallel as a "Get Out of Opposition Free" card.
The Labour Chancellor has delivered a Budget whose headroom is still small, and is based on a series of optimistic assumptions and tax rises in an election year, and your story is...litigating which one of the chess competitions in the 90s was the *real* under-14 champion? Really?
