The thing about the Taliban is that it's probably best understood as a Pashtun ethnic movement rather than a religious one. The Afghanistan-Pakistan border divides the Pashtun tribal lands almost exactly in half, leaving Pashtuns as ethnic minorities in both Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Pakistan supported the Taliban because it got the Pashtun militias to stop pushing for independence of the Pashtun territories from the Pakistani state for a bit and focused most of their energy on Afghanistan and the US for a while. It was always kicking the can down the road but they got 20 years.

What broke me was the elderly Pashtun dad who couldn’t read or write or speak any English or drive who had 3 months to find a job so he could support his family. He gave me tea and candy and was so sweet, but he was terrified that ICE was going to come get him.

And this is not a thing unique to Afghanistan by any means! Individual rights are historically a bizarre and novel concept.
"The town tells you to [marry/divorce/other life-changing decision]" was common in 19th century rural Germany, there's no reason to believe this is unique to Pashtun culture.

Again, back to Afghanistan, the striking cultural difference is that bodily autonomy or really anything you would recognize as individual rights is nonexistent.
