At all times, people--rich and poor, educated and uneducated, privileged and not--are susceptible to the authoritarian temptation. But when it becomes clear that the wannabe authoritarian is making you poorer and your country weaker, perhaps resistance is easier? Perhaps?

We need elected leaders who know when to fight, how to fight, and who to fight for. Not passivity, and not just fighting for fighting’s sake.
I've taken to calling this "optimistic passivity," but I'm sure there are terms that are more well suited.
I keep coming back to the idea of "Optimistic Passivity." It’s that collective sigh of relief the broad liberal-left coalition seems to feel in between the waves of acute, highly visible crisis.
I think the media environment plays a part. The lack of a coherent theory of social change does as well.
