On Christmas Eve 1861, Pío and Andrés Pico produced a grand Pastorela, a popular Christmas folk drama still performed throughout the Southwest. My 2016 article for @pbssocal:  www.pbssocal.org/shows/lost-l...  #history
La Pastorela: An Old Los Angeles Christmastime Tradition
Still performed today, La Pastorela was among the first theatrical productions staged in Southern California.

The Pastorela is a traditional Mexican theatrical performance, deeply tied to the holiday season, that blends religious narrative, music, dancing, and comedy. First introduced by Spanish missionaries in the 16th century to evangelize the indigenous populations, it tells the story of a group of shepherds on a pilgrimage to Bethlehem to witness the birth of Jesus. Following the conquest of Mexico by Cortez and his conquistadors, Roman Catholic missionaries arrived with the charge to convert the Indians to Christianity. Because these Indians had traditionally used masks, costumes, music, and dramatic performances to portray their gods and beliefs, it seemed obvious that such theatrical practices could be used to teach them about European religion, so plays that had long served to convey and reinforce Christian teachings in Spain and other European nations were adapted by the missionaries for use in New Spain. Of these, the most famous are La Pastorela (the Shepherd’s Play) and Los Moros y Cristianos (the drama of the Moors and Christians).

Yo fui reina de la primavera en el kinder, hadita en la primaria y luego pastora floja en una pastorela... Habría que inventar un espacio en el currículum para "actuaciones que avergüenzan desde el presente" 😹

Found this one on a list, watching it now, it's lots of fun.

Joaquin Cosio is "large bad guy" in 10000 American movies, it's great to see him having fun and being hilarious in this comedy about a dude who REALLY loves playing the devil in the Pastorela (comedic nativity play) every year.
Posted for Pastorela: A very large man dressed as the devil stands back to back with a normal sized man in an angel costume. In the background are an older priest and a young nun.
