getting digitized via Moravec transfer but refusing to tell my parents which way I did it out of principled solidarity with patternists

I decided I would do that. And I enjoyed them. And I started to think. No, they really weren't any more similar to the Patternists series than I had suspected they would be. And I realized "books by Black people" is a genre in book vending. Which I knew, but I didn't know it was ALL ENCOMPASSING.

I think one of the most sly, incisive things Octavia E. Butler wrote (among many) is how the Patternists suffer “psychic feedback” from their own children and so offload it all to enslaved thralls
How many new tech products are “we invented new ways to not spend time with your kids”

Yeah, that's a high bar. The longest series I could find that I've read is the Patternists series (4 books) by Octavia E. Butler.

Each book is centuries apart and goes from the roots of the genetic experiments of the disembodied being Doro to create others like himself in pre-colonial Africa to the distant future where Patternists rule and are locked in endless war with bestial Clayarks, humans warped by an alien virus.

Mind of My Mind, the second book in the Patternist series, was a major step down.

Like Wild Seed, it's character driven, but the characters aren't engaging leaving the book feeling empty due to lack of plot.

Together, the “Patternists” were growing into something that he could observe, hamper, or destroy but not something he could join. They were his goal, half accomplished. He watched them with carefully concealed emotions of suspicion and envy.

From the Manual and Reference of the Fonlands – Disc of Sakpata
Gold Apprentice Compound The compound was formed on Sakpata’s Disc in relatively recent history to foster a scholarly understanding of the powers of Fonlanders. The most serious students of Pattern Magic attend the School of Patternists that is located in the Nanto Highlands of the northern Disc that surrounds the pillar to the Lofted Disc. While the most powerful and flashy wizards of pattern magic usually attend the Golden School on the Disc of Xêvioso, master Patternists have always congregated in the northern highlands of the Disc of Sakpata and they formed the School of Patternists that emphasized a deep study of the pattern and the magics derivative of it.

I’ve been blowing through Octavia Butler’s Patternists series over the past few weeks. Love how each of them threads together while standing completely on its own.

Love seeing Octavia Butler and Heinlein on the list—such great minds. Curious what stood out most to you from the Patternists series!

Gonna have a Malamar in Z-A and name her Mary the first Patternist from Mind of my Mind (she and her Patternists employ telepathic mind control in a central hub city like Malamar in Lumiose in the trailers).

She’s also described as such in the novel by a character named Emma funnily enough:

says “It’s better to be a master than to be a slave” and how she’s described as having had become a “master of her self” In effect, Anyanwu decided to become a master of herself one last time before she could become a slave at the hands of Mary and the Patternists

(Suicide ment.) Ok but like thinking about this some more, Anyanwu/Emma deciding to take her life at the end so Mary couldn’t mind control her to be a slave like some of the other non-psychics (or “mutes” as Mary and the other Patternists call them) is an interesting allusion to Wild Seed where she-
