I found a very early post box in Eton, Berkshire. It's a Type PB1 VIII from 1856, a time before a standard design for postboxes had been settled upon.

Answer: yes, and we think so.
We found multiple instances of influenza-like viruses in tunicate metatranscriptomes (shown in red) that fell towards the base of the clade. Here is the phylogeny for PB1, but the pattern held up for the other segments, too.

Experimental infections showed that 1918 was more pathogenic in mice, ferrets, & macaques than seasonal flu. 1918 can disseminate within a host to the lower respiratory tract & beyond. This is us how 1918 killed people: with HA, PA, PB1, & PB2 + disrupting the host response.
