## Scale 2025 saw the Ethereum gas limit double (from 30M to 60M), and it introduced PeerDAS which gave us a huge amount of breathing room of capacity for L2s (and in the future for putting Ethereum L1 data into blobs). But 2026 is the year where all of last year's preparatory work really pays off. We will get: * Block-level access lists (BALs), which allow parallellized verification of blocks * ePBS, which (among other things) makes it safe for block execution to take a much larger portion of the slot * Gas repricings, which make slow operations more expensive, making it safe to greatly increase the gas limit without vulnerability to DoS risks The above three things stack *multiplicatively* with each other (eg. if each of the above gives us 3x gain, together we get 27x gain). However, this applies only to execution. The other two major resources are calldata and state creation. For calldata, (i) ePBS also applies, and (ii) p2p improvements that Raul and others are working hard on will improve broadcasting efficiency. So we will get a boost, but a smaller boost than execution. To compensate for this difference, the floor gas cost of calldata will go up somewhat. For state creation, this doc is still a good guide to our thinking: https://ethresear.ch/t/hyper-scaling-state-by-creating-new-forms-of-state/24052 Basically, BALs also enable faster sync, but on the whole, it's much harder to scale state than the other two resources, and so the gas cost of state will go up significantly relative to the other two resources. Applications should make tradeoffs to save less state in exchange for more calldata and/or more execution. In the longer term, we will likely figure out some other type of state to introduce alongside existing state that will be able to scale the full 1000x.
