The Pendulation Swing
The one where we're all going crazy and possibly living in a simulation but doesn't it sort of feel like there are larger forces at play manufacturing pendulum swings in our pop culture?

ask me how I know...

I realized a lot of the way EMDR is trained relies on people being able to visualize in their minds so I figured out accommodations

You can do Emotional Containment w/o the client visualizing & skip “Happy Place” & just work with Resource States or Intentional Savoring to practice pendulation etc

A good concept to deal with current times is "pendulation", where you let yourself observe events & feel those feelings, and then you swing away to what makes you feel grounded, secure, yourself. By allowing ourselves permission to move from state to state, we can hold steady, balanced in ourselves

I watched a video on the concept of pendulation, which is useful for understanding that a traumatic experience we went through, past tense, did end, and that our re-experiencing it, or re-processing it, will end, and how to be with that experience to get to the end. www.youtube.com/watch?v=LiXO...

Pendulation used here is a term from the Somatic Experiencing therapy modality referring to swinging between trauma/activation and resourcing (or comfort and discomfort) to help build tolerance for nervous system activation. Hard to fully summarize in one skeet so here are a couple graphics I found:

I am here for funsies!

AND this shit is NUANCED

have some patience, stick around, have a seat, tell me your opinions because maybe they'll help me improve my perspective as well!

the medical model & the neurodiversity movement require pendulation between 2 worlds

there's a lot to discuss!

oh yes!!! i learned the term pendulation in reference to how shame makes it impossible to pendulate.

I think of it as a pendulation between our thoughts about what is ideal, and our teachings rooted in the evidence we’ve studied

AND which we all agree requires some evolution

We’re uncovering what makes more sense right now, in about a million little pockets of expertise & culture across the world

My therapist and I talk about “pendulation” as an alternative to balance all the time which feels more buoyant than measured if that makes sense

Got Aphantasia and want to do EMDR?

No problem!

You don’t have to be able to visualize for EMDR.

Clinicians, you can do Emotional Containment w/o the client visualizing & skip “Happy/Special Place” & just work with Resource States or Intentional Savoring to practice pendulation etc

Man I also find it very hard. I think we feel like we are “prepared” if we stay hyper vigilant. But actually (my somatic experiencing therapist taught me this a few years ago) pendulation and ability to slide between nervous system states is helping us be ready more than being “on” all the time.
February 11, 2026 at 5:13 PM
Yes! That’s the pendulation we can keep training up! Love that for you.

I'm a mental health therapist, and some of the most clarifying terms/concepts I learned were "titration" and "pendulation." Healthy, lasting change isn't achieved by pushing through to violent catharsis so much as dipping in, coming out and processing; repeat. Slow and steady (loosely defined)

Mx. Fee is right, but it’s not just okay to joke and have fun - it’s critically important! It’s called pendulation, and it’s essential for your mental health if you are regularly consuming heavy news. (I’m bad at it, but I’m learning.) Burning out helps no one, so listen to Mx. Fee!
Small FYI in case you weren't quite sure...

People can post jokes about unrelated things AND care about Palestine. Like, we're capable of doing that. Making a joke about something else doesn't mean we've forgotten or don't give a shit. It makes me think you don't care and just want to be SEEN to.
