October is one of the best months to go birding in Costa Rica. Check out some of the recent birding news at my blog!
Costa Rica Birding News October, 2026
It's October 6, do you know where your birds are? I'm talking Red-eyed Vireos, Blackburnian Warblers, Northern Yellow Warblers, wood-pewees, and other species gone from their breeding grounds. I know ...

last day in Colombia, managed to grab a couple of hours in the botanic gardens in between flights

my first Acadian Flycatcher, a trio of Blackburnian Warblers, 2 more Yellow-billed Cuckoos and handfuls of Red-eyed Vireos, Eastern Kingbirds and Wood-Pewees from both east and west

Migration is ace

They’re sweet wee things. I only hear them during migration times, so it’s always a treat. Pewees sing in the woods in a few parks I frequent. It’s one of my favourite sounds (not seens 😭) of summer… up there with great-crested flycatchers and indigo buntings. At least catbirds come out when I pish.

Eastern Wood Pewees are unmistakable because they feature two prominent white wing bars visible even when at rest. This classic "perch-and-sally" forager often surveys its territory from a favored perch in open woodlands like Lakes Park. #Birding #FloridaWildlife

Eastern Wood Pewees are typically found perching upright on angled branches at Lakes Park, using the vantage point to spot flying insects. They have specialized for snatching almost entirely flying insect prey mid-air during their migrations. #SWFLWildlife #EasternWoodPewee

Just my usual neighborhood walk. A couple of Pewees and a Red-eye still hanging around were the highlights

#Bird of the Day: Willow Flycatcher (WIFL)
On this particular outing, sounds of both Western Wood-Pewees and Willow Flycatchers were being picked up by the Merlin app. To me, the two look quite similar to one another, & I would normally be hesitant to determine which one I was seeing, but as this

Oh yeah, morning birding. No warblers! Again! The ravens from yesterday were barely there today. Pewees, tanager, oriole. A little cool for the date. Oh well, there's always the new week.

Eastern Wood Pewees are out calling this afternoon.
The Voyager episode with Tuvix just opened, and I can hear an Eastern Wood Pewee calling in the background again and again.

Maybe slip a length of bark in there.

Don't know if you saw it but there was a species at risk rating list put out for h5n1 and a lot of common species are at relatively low risk, will be good to still be able to put clean water out without too much concern for most parrots, pewees etc.

Reposting this for today's #BirdOfTheDay theme, #50ShadesOfGrey. Eastern wood-pewees have been in my neighborhood all summer long. #Birds
This has been an all summer long thing. I see them often and hear them every day.

An Eastern Wood-Pewee (Contopus virens).
(In May, Eastern Wood-Pewees return to North Texas to breed🪺).

Northern Tropical Pewee (Contopus bogotensis)
10 April 2025. Comandancia de Sarapiquí Road, Heredia, Costa Rica.

This drab-looking flycatcher closely resembles the Wood-Pewees of North America, but has shorter wings and very different vocalizations. We were able to confirm it by its call.
