Data Correction Workflow for Isotope Analysis of Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA) by Orbitrap-IRMS
AbstractData corrections (data normalization) for isotope analyses are crucial for traditional magnetic sector isotope ratio mass spectrometry to facilitate meaningful interlaboratory data comparisons. Within the nascent field of Orbitrap-IRMS (isotope ratio mass spectrometry by Orbitrap mass spectrometry) and particularly the application of Orbitrap-IRMS to the analysis of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), data correction procedures do not exist. We present a procedure for correcting data generated during the analysis of PFASs by Orbitrap-IRMS. This procedure will provide for a robust comparison of data between laboratories.

Yea like PFASs are very cool chemicals independent of their leeching into the water supply.

The article does mention PFASs. There are thousands of these types of compounds. It would be nice to be a bit more specific.

Emerging contaminants follow distinct rules when partitioning between sediment and water, study finds
Emerging contaminants—including per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), antibiotics (ABs), and endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs)—are increasingly detected in rivers worldwide. Sediments act as both long-term sinks and potential sources in natural aquatic systems, releasing contaminants back into the water under disturbances. Yet direct monitoring of sediment-water partitioning remains challenging due to ultra-trace concentrations, limited sensing technologies, and high analytical costs. Most available data rely on labor-intensive sampling with limited spatial and temporal coverage. Due to these challenges, there is an urgent need for reliable prediction methods that can work across large or data-scarce regions. Now, a research team from Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou, China, has developed a cross-scale predictive framework that reveals exactly how these contaminants behave. Their findings, published (DOI: 10.1016/j.jese.2026.100751) on August 14, 2026, in Environmental Science and Ecotechnology, show that antibiotics are primarily governed by molecular descriptors, PFASs are strongly modulated by ion-mediated interfacial processes, and EDCs exhibit synergistic regulation by molecular, geochemical and basin-scale factors. The team compiled a nationwide dataset of 5,085 paired sediment-water records from 1,093 sampling sites across China's seven major river basins. They then built a multi-branch multi-head attention (MB-MHA) machine learning architecture—a sophisticated framework that processes molecular descriptors, sediment-water properties and basin...

'Forever Chemicals': Scientists Find a Genius (And Cheaper) Way to Remove PFAS From Soil
Every year, millions of dry metric tons of biosolids – the nutrient-rich stuff left over from municipal sewage treatment, aka sludge – are applied to US soils.

Our results highlight how much is still unknown about the firefighter exposome – there are a lot of poorly studied chemicals that firefighters are exposed to on the job, including novel PFASs that haven’t been studied yet.
July 22, 2026 at 10:40 PM
Based on the structure and talking with colleagues, I think it might be something that formed when PFASs present in products like furniture upholstery were combusted during the fire. It could also be something that formed in the body after these firefighters were exposed to a related PFAS.

We analyzed PFASs in blood of 33 firefighters from the Tucson Fire Department. We compared blood collected during their annual checkup to blood collected within 35 hours of responding to a fire. We analyzed the samples with advanced mass spectrometry techniques to screen for known and novel PFASs.

Despite their protective gear, levels of some PFASs (aka “forever chemicals”) can increase in the blood of firefighters after being involved in a fire. These chemicals may be short-lived “markers” of a chemical exposure that happened during firefighting, but health impacts are not yet known. (1/n)
Known and Novel Per/Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFASs) in Serum of Tucson (AZ) Firefighters
Per/polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) exposure is a serious concern for firefighters, but the contribution of firefighting activities to overall PFAS body burden remains poorly understood. We hypothesized that overlooked novel PFASs may be elevated in firefighter serum after fire suppression activities. We analyzed paired “baseline” (annual checkup) and “postfire” (within 35 h of fire) serum from 33 members of the Tucson Fire Department using high-resolution mass spectrometry. We measured concentrations of 49 PFASs via targeted quantitation and detected 15 in >50% of samples. Concentrations of target analytes were not significantly different between baseline and postfire paired samples. However, branched PFOS isomers and linear PFHxS were significantly elevated compared to the general population. Suspect screening enabled the identification of 26 additional PFASs. Two tentatively identified phosphate-containing PFASs were significantly (p < 0.01) elevated postfire. These chemicals may be associated with exposure to fluorinated aryl phosphate flame retardants or their combustion transformation products during fire response. Several other novel PFASs were detected in baseline and postfire samples, including bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (bis-FMeSI). The presence of novel PFASs in serum from firefighters highlights the need for more research into their occurrence in occupationally exposed groups and the general population, exposure sources, and toxicokinetics.

PFAS contamination of biosolids is an insidious problem. PFASs leach out of biosolids into plants that people and livestock eat. PFASs also leach out of soils into groundwater, leading to contamination of nearby drinking water sources (likely case in North Centre Township...)
