My city has been working on all the redesign and transit stuff you mentioned, but when our stupid provincial government banned most photoradar for political reasons, the rates of speeding and traffic fatalities rose sharply. We’re not better off after getting rid of camera enforcement.

photoradar cameras that *only* take images of the license plate of a speeding vehicle and where images can only be subpoenaed on specific grounds (plate, date, and region) could avoid much of the abuse potential of always-on cameras with automated plate reader data that police forces can browse

San Francisco’s “sex worker abatement” plan includes the installation of 22 foot surveillance cameras. Each unit, created by LiveView Technologies, purportedly costs between $30,000 and $40,000 a year to operate.

In #Alberta & #Ontario driving is a more perilous task because of #BadGov. Removing #photoradar from the policing toolkit creates a negative impact as a majority of drivers now ignore posted speeds, while driving recklessly. This summer on both provs roads I felt at risk driving the speed limit.

Smith & her Freedumb UCP have worked hard to dismantle simple, effective mechanisms to keep people safe. Restricting photoradar is one of those decisions.

More than 65,000 camera flashes have caught speeders on Talbot Avenue and raised millions of dollars for the city over the last decade. But is photo-radar technology making River Elm School students and others in the ward safer? City council byelection candidates Emma Durand-Wood and Chris Sweryda, two of the seven people vying for the open seat, both have a lengthy response to the question. “It’s a tool we should be using a lot more,” said Durand-Wood, co-founder of Safe Speeds Winnipeg, which lobbies for default residential speed limits to be 30 km/h. “But I think continuing to use photoradar without connecting the revenue from enforcement to physically making changes to areas where this is happening a lot is irresponsible.” City police piloted then-new technology in October 2001 in an effort to deter drivers from speeding and running red lights. Safe Speeds campaigns for lowered speed limits, traffic-calming measures and bike-lane installation. Sweryda’s campaign for council has been endorsed by WiseUp Winnipeg, a rival group that also bills itself as a grassroots initiative to improve road safety. WiseUp’s Todd Dube and his network focus on fighting tickets in areas where there’s a disproportionate number, and government corruption at large. I'm no fan of Dreeshen, but he's right about City using photo radar as a cash cow. The real issue is the street design that encourages speeding.

City collected millions from photo radar and did not use it to fix the actual problem.

Which is more dangerous? A person on a bicycle going through a stop sign at 10mph/15 kmh or a car speeding at (avg speed of) 56 km/h in a 40 km residential zone?
If you ask the enraged driver who just received a photoradar ticket for speeding past a speed-limit sign, it's not themselves!

Car drivers surprised that speeding at avg speed of 56 km/h in a 40 km/h residential zone past the new photoradar camera results in them getting a speeding ticket in the mail.
They are demanding the right to speed and the end of the new photo radars.
Turns out there's a LOT of speeding drivers.
