Lawn mowers go through more mandatory safety testing than AI models right now, and that’s just nuts.

Fortunately, there’s a powerful response of solidarity and shared safety, that every Jewish & non-Jewish Michigander can do on Tuesday:

Our safety comes from welcoming the stranger, fighting for universal human rights, and building pluralist democracy — not from endorsing neo-Nazi adjacent MAGA fanatics.

fascism arrives promising safety
I visited the UK for a a few days this year and was SHOCKED when things like "my Bluesky DMs" were just... Not available?? Without some proof of identity thing that is absurd, insulting, bizarre, invasive, surely insecure, and absolutely NEVER something I would interact with, On Principle.

Look how much space pedestrians are expected to sacrifice for pedestrian safety versus how much motoring space is lost for pedestrian safety (less than none)

critical nuance here: “AI safety” is a frame the AI industry itself created, which emphasizes inevitability and acceptance of harms. “AI ethics” is the conversation they refuse to have and they contain that conversation via discussing “AI safety.”

First, let’s be clear: Road safety is a disaster in the USA, where per capita crash death rates are:
🔹 2x 🇨🇦
🔹 3x 🇪🇸
🔹 4x 🇯🇵

Every other rich country is much less crash-prone than the US.

Very important safety message from @janhamcam.bsky.social ! Please repost! ❤️💜🌻
hi everyone, Cam here. on my AM walk this morning i collected 5 or so pieces of CHOCOLATE Halloween candy in addition to other candy lost or tossed. i know not everyone can police their 'hood, but please be sure to keep a watchful eye when walking your dog or if you've an indoor/outdoor kitty.

The AI safety positions are a little too reminiscent of the plastics industry pushing recycling programs rather than genuine industry regulation.

Really very good visual story on AI agents and safety testing in the FT, featuring this vg quote from Stewart Russell ig.ft.com/ai-safety/?s...

The Seattle Times has more reporting resources than The Urbanist, but also we would never publish counterproductive garbage about pedestrian safety.
Moral of the story: If you want fewer crash deaths, target the people and institutions who can make the most substantive change.

Worse than pointless, blaming individuals is a distraction. This op-ed is counterproductive garbage.

Thread about who gets to make traffic safety decisions in historic districts. Hint: It’s not people who understand or care about traffic safety.
2 architects, 2 property owners, a retail business owner, an attorney, an architectural historian, a human services representative, an at large member and a Get Engaged youth member get to decide if SDOT is allowed to make a street safer in Pioneer Square.

When my colleague Jamie West showed me this ad from Doug Ford’s government, he couldn’t stop laughing.

Jamie spent 17 years working in mines, and in the photo he spotted pickaxes, no safety gear and half a dozen violations of Ontario’s own safety rules.
