Pianolas as well. They were popular household instruments before the phonograph or wireless could provide background music, and could be played like a normal piano, or would play popular music for you. Some music rolls even came with lyric sheets for your proto-karaoke nights!

Remembered recently how much I enjoy automatic music-- antique software-driven instruments programmed with fairly blunt physical means, but full of awe and subtlety. Orchestrions, pianolas, Paganinis, and my personal favorite: Opera on music boxes. The utmost striving in the smallest compass.

Remembered recently how much I enjoy automatic music-- antique software-driven instruments programmed with fairly blunt physical means, but full of awe and subtlety. Orchestrions, pianolas, Paganinis, and my personal favorite: Opera on music boxes. The utmost striving in the smallest compass.
Sounds like a good plan, Utrecht is similar to Amsterdam, but much less overrun by tourists. Lively enough, much more relaxed. Plenty to see & do, the Nijntje museum, also a museum with self-playing musical instruments (music boxes, pianolas, etc.) that I used to enjoy visiting and a railway museum.
