my workplace installed new POS card reader pinpads.
If you scan your card and it fails to read it, it makes a neutral ping sound. I'm already getting people thinking that meant they paid and trying to walk off.
at this point I am convinced companies pull these sounds out of a hat or something

US doesn't have the full C+P. Instead it has a stripped down version that didn't require the heavier-duty encryption capability on the PINpads (to address the upgrade $ and severe supply crunch at the time) while JUST INCIDENTALLY keeping the online auth txn revenue stream flowing
