Endosperm is triploid (a unique character in Flowering Plants), but in a few lineages, the endosperm’s job is taken over by the perisperm, a diploid maternal tissue surrounding the megaspore. A classic example of perisperm is Piper nigrum. #cotyledon #Piperaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Piper dispersed from South America first to Southern Africa, then on to South East Asia, where it spread across the Wallace & Lydekker's lines several times! Intrigued? The full paper can be found here: doi.org/10.1093/botl... (2/2) @linneansociety.bsky.social
Origin and biogeographical history of Palaeotropical Piper (Piperaceae): multiple long-distance dispersals from South America initiated during the Middle Eocene climatic optimum
Abstract. Piper is the largest genus of Piperaceae and second largest in the angiosperms, but the biogeography and timing of its global radiation has not y

Leaf vocabulary 2: PELTATE means shield-shaped & describes the attachment of the petiole to the ± middle (rather than the edge) of the blade, as in Peperomia hernandiifolia. The petiole attaches to the back of the blade where the leaf veins originate. #Piperaceae #botany 🌾🧪🌱

At maturity, the inflorescences of Piper (#Piperaceae) become fleshy with tiny seeds embedded in the flesh. They stand proud of the foliage & are easily accessed by passing bats, who disperse the seeds. 📷: Piper auritum. 🦇 #TropicalBotany #BatWeek #botany 🌾🧪🌱

Piper (no, not the magical man who tamed the rats) is the largest genus of Piperaceae & second largest angiosperm, yet its biogeography & global radiation still requires research. Here, phylogenetic analysis investigated divergence time, revealing it spread to mainland Africa twice! (1/2)🌍 🧪 👇

Peruvian Peppertree (Schinus molle, #Anacardiaceae, along with cashew & mango)... An ornamental in So. Calif, it's dioecious, and pink "peppercorn" fruits are blended w/ black pepper (Piperaceae). Known to be allergenic and somewhat poisonous depending on the dose. #NaturalHistory #Botany

Just like the Piper (#Piperaceae) in yesterday’s post, the unrelated Cecropia (#Urticaceae) has tiny seeds embedded in a fleshy inflorescence. Birds love these soft, squishy fruits (they’re like a vegetarian caterpillar) as do bats, which disperse the seeds. 🦇 #TropicalBotany #BatWeek #botany 🌾🧪

I don't know a lot about plants. I'm not a plant daddy, I'm a home cook.

But I do know that the entire family of Solanaceae - nightshades - are toxic, and few of the parts are edible. Potato, tomato, etc.

Thai pepper plants aka Piperaceae 𝘗𝘪𝘱𝘦𝘳 𝘴𝘱. ARE NOT THE SAME AS TOXIC Solanaceae 𝘊𝘢𝘱𝘴𝘪𝘤𝘶𝘮 𝘴𝘱.

🧪 Researchers traced the evolutionary history of Piper (yes, the black pepper genus) using molecular phylogenies and biogeographic modelling.
Turns out they have crossed oceans and radiated independently across the Old World tropics, especially Southeast Asia.
This is deep-time plant migration!

The chestnut short-tailed bat (Carollia castanea) is a bat species from South and Central America. The species is often confused with the Benkeith's short-tailed bat. It is a mainly frugivorous species that has been known to consume insects (its favorite food being piperaceae). To determine which
