"The word pepper traces back to the Sanskrit word pippalī, which referred to long pepper. As the spice was traded across the globe, the term evolved linguistically through various languages, ultimately adapting to describe entirely unrelated plants with a similar pungent taste."

(Java long pepper. It's still very fragrant. Much better than the Indian pippali? But very hard to find, so I ration it.)

Pippali rings a bell. I'm trying a place in Old Swan later when I get the meat, The Spice Market. Looks like my best shot round here.

BTW if you ever have a chance to use long pepper I highly recommend it. It’s absolutely delicious. It has the same sort of kick as black pepper, but a little bit fruitier and like about twice as spicy. I’ve almost completely switched over to using it in place of black pepper. Good stuff.

Long pepper (Piper longum), sometimes called Indian long pepper or pippali, is a flowering vine in the family Piperaceae, cultivated for its fruit, which is usually dried and used as a spice and seasoning.

In the "Wrath of Khan" novelization, Saavik is shown eating an egg dish seasoned with a Romulan pepper called Pippin.

I want to see a chili made with pippali, adjustable at these levels: Romulan - Vulcan - Klingon - Human.

"The English word pepper traces back through Latin to the Sanskrit pippali, which specifically meant 'long pepper'. If it’s an edible plant that burns your tongue, somebody has probably called it 'pepper'."

Batata. Kaju. Ananas.

Several familiar Hindi food words came through Portuguese influence, but “mirchi” didn’t. It traces back to an older Sanskrit word for black pepper. Even the English word “pepper” comes from Sanskrit pippali, meaning long pepper.

Siddhartha Gautama met Parvati on the path of enlightenment. She was disguised as a pippali and, therefore, easily seduced Siddhartha, and subsequently gave birth to their son Srirachannius, demigod of enlightened spicy condiments.

“The English word pepper traces back through Latin to the Sanskrit pippali, which specifically meant “long pepper” (and still does in Hindi and Urdu). Europeans once loved long pepper so much that they called all “hot” spices by its name.”
