T.S. Thursday:
2.8 Ga Granodiorite from the Beartooth Mtns, MT in crossed polars and cathodoluminescence. In CL the red zone between microcline and plagioclase is a fine-grained myrmekite (plagioclase and quartz intergrowths). Contributed by Darrell Henry.

Spectacular concentric zoning and twinning of large titanaugite in essexite (nepheline monzogabbro) from Lennoxtown, Scotland. Plagioclase inclusions within the phenocryst align with zoning just as proximal groundmass plagioclase align with its edge. #ThinSectionThursday 🧪⚒️

Reading this paper on how ants are extremely good at capturing CO2 from the atmosphere via enhanced rock weathering, to the extent that ants may have helped cool the planet in the Cenozoic Era.

XPL view showing plagioclase microlites aligning around basaltic agglomeration in andesite (adakite) from Cook Island (Chile). In PPL, brown patches at three-grain boundaries in agglomeration show incipient melting.

Caution! Reacting when wet! 🧪⚒️

Plagioclase breakdown in action with plagioclase reacting to clinozoisite + kyanite + quartz + white mica. The classic reaction at high pressure conditions. I just got some TEM results from these beautiful samples, so stay tuned! #thinsectionthursday

Incredible rock! A retrogressed eclogite in which amazing simplectites developed during amphibolite-facies metamorphism. Garnet is surrounded by coronas of plagioclase and hornblende. Omphacite is replaced by diopside + plagioclase simplectites. ❤️
