The Plantationocene

(with added Khmer Rouge / Cultural Revolution characteristics)
Brooke Rollins on farm laborers: "There will be no amnesty. The mass deportations continue, but in a strategic way. And we move the workforce toward automation and 100% American participation, which with 34 million able-bodied on Medicaid we should be able to do fairly quickly."

That's a wrap for today's defenses!

My PhD supervisee who decided to work on NK Jemisin's Broken Earth trilogy after reading my #ecoGothic #Plantationocene article has successfully passed her PhD proposal defense! So proud of her and looking forward to her research!

The term #Plantationocene is sadly appropriate for our age: huge impoverishment of life, terribly dangerous lack of diversity

Saidiya Hartman did not miss when she wrote that an integral aspect of antebellum society was purposeful delight at the suffering of the enslaved (Scene of Subjection)

the enjoyment of the plantationocene is extended through turning sites of carceral violence into wedding or queer party hot spots

Humanity isn't evenly to blame for ecological destruction, so maybe our era should be called the Plantationocene or Capitalocene. Instead of a rename, Holloway proposes a counterhistory of the last 550 years. "We can no longer pretend to be 'good individuals in so-called modern Western scripts'."
