#FairyTaleTuesday 'The Ecogothic Werewolf in Literature,' by Kaja Franck

Using an Ecogothic lens, this book offers a new conceptual framework for the werewolf in literature, recasting the lycanthrope as an emblem for society's fear of untamed wilderness. www.bloomsbury.com/us/ecogothic...

This just out! Quite stoked to be included with an essay on EcoGothic as I’m alongside some seriously proper Victorianists in there

very pleased to have signed the advance contract for my first monograph, Ecogothic America and the Twenty-First-Century Novel, with @edinburghup.bsky.social !

Just me nodding analytically like "Hmmm yes yes I did that on purpose" as various decision points/disasters in the book are compared to suggested tenets of the ecogothic and the persistence of refusal to engage with anthropocentrism/human domination are lauded hmm yes yes

(It was nerve-wracking)

Back to Gothic studies! 🦇🐈‍⬛️💀

The EcoGothic Werewolf in Literature:

Genuinely an enjoyable read. The author's argument is both extensive and compelling, and shows the importance of hybridity and the werewolf as humankind attempts to imagine a future as a species.

"Categorizing South of Midnight’s narrative as one of nature versus nurture feels too reductive."

@phoenixsimms.bsky.social explores the EcoGothic and EthnoGothic themes in South of Midnight:
Mending the Gardens of History - Unwinnable
South of Midnight uses nature to underscore the ways that human care and legacies of hatred scar not just on a human-scale.

My latest article, 'The Queer Time of Ecogothic', is out open-access today in Green Letters.

As far as I know this is the first academic treatment of K-Ming Chang's (odd, playful, gross, wonderful) novel Bestiary.

The Queer Time of Ecogothic
This article proposes that ecogothic fiction makes use of queer time in order to explore the unusual temporal experiences and interpersonal relations that emerge from a sense of curtailed ecologica...

My most recent gothic/horror publication was an article on Cotton Mather and whales: "Biblical Marine Biology: Cotton Mather’s Cetological Exegesis and the Oceanic Ecogothic." Way more fun than it sounds!🐋

It was in the pictured collection.

That's a wrap for today's defenses!

My PhD supervisee who decided to work on NK Jemisin's Broken Earth trilogy after reading my #ecoGothic #Plantationocene article has successfully passed her PhD proposal defense! So proud of her and looking forward to her research!

If this one space opera (not Bunian Empire, but my tri-sail universe) short story ever gets picked up, my publication notes will *not* include the inciting RL encounter (happened on vacation) that inspired it. I'd probably just write around other inspirations and motifs like the ecoGothic elements.

A public-facing article on the ecogothic! Exciting to see the concept move out of academia and into other forums. Not exactly a new idea, though...

A brilliant morning talk with Marine Galine organised by @romgothsam.bsky.social about the Irish bog from an Ecogothic perspective, followed by abject feminity and the role of motherhood in Irish folk horror cinema.

This free talk will be repeated at 7pm (Eventbrite).
