A Disturbing New Kind of Coral Pollution Is Forming on Japan's Beaches
‘Plasticorals,’ pieces of coral rubble fused with plastic, are lasting signs of human activity and may pose a threat to marine ecosystems. While widely manufactured materials like cement and steel degrade over millennia, plastic remains intact long enough that future geologists will likely identify the period from the 1950s onward as a distinct synthetic layer in the Earth’s crust. This era is popularly called the Plasticene, and researchers are now documenting how synthetic debris physically merges with natural environments. On the beaches of Okinawa, Japan, melted household plastic has seeped into the tiny pores of dead coral, forming debris that researchers call “plasticorals.” The plastic and coral have become inseparable, creating a form of pollution that could wash back into the sea in rubble that normally supports reef life. Melted plastic inside coral skeletons Small, brightly colored specks among the pale coral rubble first drew researchers’ attention during routine beach litter surveys on the subtropical island. A team from the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) and the University of the Ryukyus brought samples back to the lab for microscopic examinations and spectroscopy, which helps identify substances through their interaction with light. Together, these analyses revealed that the specks...

Yeh I wonder if the plasticene ones from the 90s end up slumping over time

(If they didn't melt in the 2004 aardman fire)

Like Lost Raiders being a tongue in cheek big budget Saturday morning cinema film, Wallace and Grommet did it in plasticene, which is frightfully British...

Living in the Plasticene Epoch is weird but at least plastic infusing all my bones and organs has given me Goo Brain. Can’t imagine how I’d live if my brain weren’t goo.

Oooh is that a sprue mark on the right, just above the plasticene? It looks a bit gold though. I guess I would cast it through the end so you don't have to file sprue marks off the body?

The technology for converting plastic into plasticene hydrocarbon fuel exists. As with oil wells there are costs going in: collecting the plastic, cost of converting etc etc. Many reasons for feasibility studies towards repairing existing environmental damages. Need a 💙🌊 to make anything happen.

I love that story about how Peter Jackson kept asking for more and more disfigurement until he personally grabbed a huge lump of plasticene and squished it onto the actor’s face.

Happy Fossil Friday! This weeks offering is news that the Inner Meadow site is now 774 sq ft. comparable to the main E -Surface at Mistaken Point & much more diverse.
We also found the first convincing #Hadryniscala which has small lateral bars on a strap like form a bit like a seaweed.

Instead, they've all become throwbacks to the
Plasticene Epoch.
(that's somewhere between the Cretintaceous Period and the Messyzoic era)...

...and here we thought Neanderthals were extinct!

Same! Ever since I heard about their employees forced on food stamps as an actual strategy they use to keep wages low, I quit! They destroyed every small business they opened near. Every 5&dime in my hometown shuttered. They helped usher in the #Plasticene era of cheap cheap and more cheap 😑
