25 years ago I was sitting in a trench just outside Plugstreet, remembering the men who did it for real in 1914.
Every Christmas (and many times throughout the year) my mind wanders back to that evening, the one of my memory and the one that took place 110 years ago today.

After a run through the Plugstreets including the still unused, on In Flanders Fields, Plugstreet 4 we rewarded ourselves with Moules & Frites at the Cafe De La Grand Place in Ploegsteert.

Looking towards the eastern edge of Ploegsteert (Plugstreet) Wood.
Just in front if the wood (right) lies the crater of the La Gheer mine. It was one of the 2 of 21 mines that failed to detonate on 7th June 1917, but did ‘go up’ on 15th July 1955, following a lightning strike.

I sat and watched his interview last night. I’m just heading out of the door to make my annual Christmas Eve trip to visit Henry’s grave and to spend some time thinking of Plugstreet.

My Great Uncle, William Thomas Hedge died on 9 May 1915 at the Battle of Aubers Ridge. No known grave. He’s remembered on the beautiful Plugstreet Memorial. I like to think he might also be in the CWGC cemetery at Aubers Ridge
