I want you to look at this leaked Citigroup memo from roughly 20 years ago and then I want you to look at some of the names they donated to in 2024.

Wealthy elites are bribing both US parties because they want us divided and fighting each other over culture wars while they expand the plutonomy.

From me: It was 20 years ago that Citigroup described America as a plutonomy, an economy by and for the rich. We now have stats to show this has gotten worse: the top 10% are doing 50% of the retail sales, and this masks the pain from below.

it's funny bc Citigroup announced that the US was in a "plutonomy" like 15 years ago and everyone was like, "ah, well... nevertheless."
okay well I'm going to throw in my two cents, too: it's not oligarchy, it's plutocracy. if Trump was poor he would not be president and if Elon was poor he wouldn't be running the entire government while Trump golfs.

Unemployment is rising, yet so is consumer spending. Why? Because the rich can buy so much more than everyone else. Economists call it a K-shaped economy; plutonomy is more accurate. From @ddayen.bsky.social: trib.al/rUAPh3u

Back in 2005, at the height of the bubble, Citigroup coined the term "plutonomy" to describe economies "where economic growth is powered by & largely consumed by the wealthy few."

The original report — which was an investment thesis! — reads as haunting premonition: drive.google.com/file/d/0B6JH...

Corporations have shifted to an economy of “premiumization” — hiking prices for luxury goods only the rich can afford and then trying to sell them to everyone. @emmarjanssen.bsky.social reports on the plutonomy:

Anyway vibesession made sense to me when I learned about the Plutonomy papers from 2005/06. They predicted that as consumption became increasingly dominated by wealthy stock owners rest of the economy would feel left behind.

Media caught up to this 15 years later with the “K” shaped economy idea.
It’s the plutonomy, stupid!
The economy's composition changed over 20 years ago, but economic reporting hasn't caught up.

Excited to show you this feature from @emmarjanssen.bsky.social on why plutocracy is a driver of the affordability crisis. It manifests in a number of different ways: 🧵

Correct. There are 2 economies. The plutonomy and the worker's economy. This is why economic averaging fails to see.

I think the concept describing is plutonomy - economic growth powered and consumed by the wealthy

“Since the pandemic, many have used the term “K-shaped economy” to demonstrate that the richer segments of society have seen their fortunes rise while the poorest fall. But I prefer “plutonomy,” a closer analogue to the idea of a Second Gilded Age”

"So it is that like those populists of that earlier era, millions of Americans have awakened to a sobering reality. They live in a plutocracy where they are disposable. Then the remedy was a popular insurgency that ignited the spark of democracy."
