Back in 2005, at the height of the bubble, Citigroup coined the term "plutonomy" to describe economies "where economic growth is powered by & largely consumed by the wealthy few."

The original report — which was an investment thesis! — reads as haunting premonition: drive.google.com/file/d/0B6JH...

US has forgotten FDR's warning: www.youtube.com/watch?v=tLaE... It has seen so much corruption pushed by the ultra-rich that now it's normalized. Unless the klepto-kakistocracy of the Epstein class is reversed, the plutonomy papers of 2006 would come true. yorkspace.library.yorku.ca/server/api/c...

On top of K-shaped Plutonomy most of life's necessities are dominated by extractive exchanges. Subscriptions whose prices change suddenly, dynamic pricing, draconian employers. This is not a sudden change, but we're approaching what feels like the breaking point of this transition.

Citigroup said it was the Plutonomy over 20 years ago. Everything we're experiencing was part of their description.

Working on a follow-up piece that attempts to measure other dimensions of this transition. See it everywhere from dynamic pricing, right-to-repair battles, workers burning warehouses.
The way we measure the economy hasn't changed in nearly a century. This methodology makes it very easy to miss the ways which life has gotten harder for the average American. Analysts at Citibank anticipated this over 20 years ago in a memo to wealthy clients.

It’s the plutonomy, stupid!
The economy's composition changed over 20 years ago, but economic reporting hasn't caught up.

This was the impetus for antitrust and the New Deal and the modern progressive movement from what I can tell. I don't know many people who solely frame wealth (Plutonomy especially) as just a fairness issue.
the ape brain is wired for distributive questions so the temptation is to think things in "those fuckers" and "our shit" terms but the reality is clearly that power is the dangerous thing they have, not money.

This is what plutonomy looks like: economic growth and consumption are powered by the wealthiest percentage of the population. We are effectively screwed

like technically speaking the "vibecession" thing is real bc on paper the economy is good but like, the economy means different things to different people

citibank suggested pivoting to the plutonomy in 2005 then tried to scrub it off the internet, but like, this is it elpidio.org/2018/02/12/c...

This bastard needs a XXXL sock stuffed in his lying mouth. His industry was warned about plutonomy 20 years ago, warned by his own industry (Citigroup), and they just kept sucking up to the wealthy while crushing the working class.

Fuck him and his bullshit […]

Plutocracy is a term you've probably heard before. It means "rule by the rich". But what is a "plutonomy"?

I'm combining plutonomy with other “pillars” of the social contract. Economy feels more extractive now. Growth opportunities like AI and crypto are pitched as securing wealth before you're cemented into a “permanent underclass.” Jobs are seen as transactional. Products are enshittifying.
I’m working on a post that talks about the three pillars of the new social contract. Plutonomy (if you are already at the top things are good), extractive relationships (enshittification, employers as private abusive governments), and (vaguely) social relationships being no longer grounded in space.
