Hiking in Cornville and can see the #PocketFire smoke north of Sedona. So it’s about 17 miles from where we were hiking.

Tourists and residents had to be evacuated from Oak Creek Canyon (the most beautiful area in Sedona).

Pavements and asphalt have an eerie pink glow that merges with the sandstone flagstones and volcanic cinder used a lot here. It looks like the light leading to a solar eclipse. Much smokier than yesterday, maybe not as windy yet. Windows closed and I'm not seeing people outside.

An unusually large number of birds have been drawn to our neighbor's shrubs and trees this morning. I suspect some have been flying out of the fire zone. Their presence is the silver lining.
Pocket Fire South of Flagstaff has more than doubled in size to 5500 acres since yesterday. High winds from the southwest continue today. Poor air quality and a lot of haze and smoke in Flagstaff. #Arizona

Last week, a friend and I planned to visit Sedona but were foiled by the #PocketFire. A week later, it grew 100 fold to ~10,000s of acres.

Much of the Southwest is burning, and there's an glaring driver: climate change. Until humans get our act together, this still needs to be said.

How climate change is driving Arizona's Pocket Fire and other blazes
Climate change brings warmer temperatures and drier weather — conditions favorable for a rapid spread of wildfires.

I spent all week covering the #PocketFire as it grew 20k acres, toward Flagstaff. Then the Mayor of nearby Williams told me:

“(Flagstaff) likes to think they should be able to tell everybody to do the same thing they do. And I've let them know that's not the case."

Williams to light July Fourth fireworks as wildfires burn nearby
The town has a history of igniting spot fires with its "famous" show. Neither neighborly fears nor the ongoing, nearby Pocket Fire have deterred them.

“When this fire really blew up and headed toward Kachina Village and the south end of Flagstaff, it ran into Slide Fire burn,” Patterson said. www.dcourier.com/news/old-bur... #fire #AZfire #PocketFire
Old burn helps contain Pocket Fire near Sedona
A burn scar from a previous wildfire helped keep the Pocket Fire from becoming “catastrophic,” officials said, though it was nevertheless a challenge to contain.
