In Nov 2019 when CUHK and PolyU were under siege by the police, we summoned a special Divine Beast whose sole purpose is to tell everyone to STFU if they’re trying to help. And we did.

It says a lot about where HKers’ heads were at by Dec 2019 - after the government sieges on CUHK *and* PolyU in Nov - that this was met with amused shrugs and lolz instead of condemnation
Merry Christmas everyone!

For some context, this graffiti from Tuen Mun was uploaded to the channels in late November when the PolyU siege was in its dying phase
It's not a fair fight

Part 1 of the PolyU Siege thread:

"Blues"

On the morning of 17 November 19, protesters who've guarded HK Polytechnic University for nearly a week since the police laid siege to the city's colleges issued a plea - We need more people. We need help.

"On your left"

HKers woke up on 18 Nov to a flood of messages on Facebook, Telegram, Instagram... all with just a simple, desperate message: Our students beg you to go on the streets. Poly needs you. All of you.

You all must be sick of the anecdote I have about a most middle-aged lib of middle-aged lib concluding during PolyU siege that cocktails are good, actually. And you won’t be able to guess what was (probably, allegedly) being passed down Nathan Road in broad daylight along the human chain to PolyU

If I recall, this happened right before PolyU and during CUHK. It's no wonder that the news of a Christmas tree burning was eclipsed by more pressing concerns.

My favourite ‘wait, what?’ anecdote is of some middle age parent telling the NYT he finally understood why Molotov cocktails are useful, after trying to dodge the riot police all day to get to PolyU - besieged by the HK police and on fire - to rescue his child

"The Writing On the Wall"

A few days after HK police laid siege to CUHK, it decided PolyU should taste tear gas and violence too. This is a small thread of the graffiti students left around their campus during the siege

Thanks for the wonderful talks and workshop by @tonymcenery.bsky.social @paulari.bsky.social @gavinbrookes.bsky.social @niallrcurry.bsky.social at ENGL in HK PolyU.
Most importantly, thanks for the gift book from Prof Baker and signature (with wishes) from Prof McEnery and Prof Baker!

They weren't charged till 2024 for their supposed involvement in the 2019 PolyU siege. One of them just 16 at the time.

Its "funny" how HK police & system keep reminding everyone of the 2019 uprising, 7 years on. Given that its pretty much illegal to comemorate it in HK.

One way to think about CUHK and PolyU siege is that they were the most effective GOTV drives in history. Another way to think about it is that the government really doesn't care whichever way you vote because they understand it's not true suffrage

I still remember the flames, rocks, water cannon, resistance and resilience in my campus.

The joke is that all the HK protests are peaceful until the cops show up. Think that’s an exaggeration as during the most intense days of the PolyU siege, HK was a city in revolt, with people creating chaos everywhere to draw the cops away from the university. Not peaceful, but justifiable
It was the police who had the truncheons and wore the spiked gloves when hitting, attacking people.

Most protestors were weapon-less. Even during the university sieges later in the year, when things got VERY horrifying, when some protestors were shown using bows and arrows and such...

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure to share my latest research on the language of trust at Hong Kong's Poly.

The study’s in press with Cambridge Elements in Forensic Linguistics and we’re releasing a new 400k corpus of Enron trader phone calls.

This also happened during the siege at PolyU in November. The medics (and student journos, iirc) were the first to get detained. Not sure whether it's a deliberate tactic by HKPF, but I wouldn't put it past them

By noon, it was clear things were escalating fast. Those holed up in PolyU - some for a few days by this point - were surrounded by hellhounds & hellfire with no way out.

Then came the SOS: "Poly is in danger. Save Poly."

The Battle for PolyU has began.
