Nothing screams 'Temperate rainforest!' quite like epiphytic polypody fern on a wet day.

It is rare to find this abundance of Polypody on a Pedunculate Oak in Sussex. Clapham Woods. Dip-slops South Downs ancient woodland, on chalk (Tarrant Chalk) near Worthing. A rare form of ancient woodland. @bsbibotany.bsky.social #southdowns #ancientwoodland #polypody

Up on the mountain, a pocket of diverse flora: holly, ivy, hard fern, polypody, buckler fern, St Patrick's cabbage, etc.

What explains this anomaly, in such contrast to the surrounding ecological desert?

Very simple: it's out of the reach of sheep 🐑

Old rainforest trees like this oak, covered in ivy, epiphytic polypody fern, navelwort + mosses, and with an abundance of nooks and crannies, are virtual ecosystems in their own right.

There are far too few left: release them from artificial grazing pressure, and that would change.
