somehow I fell in with the tpot rats/postrats on tw*tter without ever having read lesswrong on purpose & only a little SSC.

the only LW in my life was & is wittgenstein & I came by my postrationalism honest via one f. nietzsche

the reason why postrationalism flowed so seamlessly out of rationalism is that this crowd at heart doesn't really believe in the notion of mind-independent reality

i think i agree with hoisting it up so nrx points to postrationalism

"Say what you will about the tenets of postrationalism but at least it's an ethos, Dude"

Yeah rationalism and postrationalism are absolutely full of smart people with similar brain problems.

tpot is "this part of twitter" and kind of came to mean a certain loose part of twitter focused around things like effective altruism, transhumanism, trying to bring about the technological singularity, rationalist? postrationalism? idk. lots of stuff. they go to vibe camp each year, they do drugs

I think it is narrower, implying some degree of fruitful interaction, usually in form of a shared interest or epistemology, not just yelling. www.lesswrong.com/posts/2Ee5DP... is how rats themselves write about it. Personally, I think postrationalism is subset of rat-adjacent, but otherwise I agree.
Rationalists, Post-Rationalists, And Rationalist-Adjacents — LessWrong
I think it's lovely and useful that we have labels, not just for rationalist, but for rationalist-adjacent and for post-rationalist. But these labels…

maybe I'll just settle into one of thos types that are vaguely witchy in a "the power of psychology" way. empty spaces type shit. FUCK it's all postrationalism

“postrationalism” is only possible insofar as these ideas enjoyed such a degree of power and success that second order corrections were needed, things like “cognitive biases” ended up being faker than appears at first glance

allowing the Eternal Tory to infest their movement and cause it to degenerate into the farces of HBD and postrationalism) rather than the wrong ones ("left"-Heideggerian cant and chauvinism about being able to embrace finitude).

Latest take on TPOT/postrationalism: "were once rationalists, or members of adjacent communities like the effective altruism movement, but grew disillusioned"

illegibility stay winning

I just realized that Chapman in [Agre and Chapman, 1987] here is David Chapman who later semi-unwittingly became a founding figure of "postrationalism", a tendency which unfortunately ended up devolving into TPOT
From a 1995 paper by Stuart Russell
"What counts in the first instance is what the agent does, not necessarily what it thinks, or even whether it thinks at all."

that's exactly what postrationalism (what TPOT originally was about) was supposed to be about? That's what the "post-" part meant

“Reading Pharmako-AI, Amor Cringe, and Air Age Blueprint together feels like being trapped in Theodor Adorno’s nightmare blunt rotation.”

on K Allado McDowell, Silicon Valley Postrationalism, ayahuasca greenwashed technocapital, and GPT-3/“AI” writing....

Yup. But also, postrationalism requires new forms of literacy, right?

Like, it’s the “nothing is impossible and everything is permitted” of metaphysics, which means the ethical bar actually needs to go much higher.

*not a sociopath voice* hey @Meaningness, what are you gonna do now that postrationalism is a subculture?
