#OvercomingBias
I would be more inclined to be charitable about this if everything else about how the human society works weren't things that were being proposed as improvements to make to our society in the OvercomingBias/Lesswrong milieu at the time.

Most people, the first time they hear Roko's Basilisk explained, are like "OMG that's so dumb". Completely as a reflex.

The minority who lack that reflex, tend to respond with a stoner-sophomoric "wow, that's deep".

The LessWrong/OvercomingBias subculture was set up to dismiss group 1.

iirc the extropians mailing list and overcomingbias had less founder-worship compared to lesswrong and ssc, maybe the original sin was just the switch from group blog to personal blog
this is at the subtext of LessWrong -- everyone there was Very Online and veterans of multiple forum wars. The subtext was "how do we create an Enlightenment-era forum after spending all of this time in Online equivalents of the 30 Years War"

robin hanson was there too. i try to forget that robin hanson exists completely, but he does. he is connected to this up at the overcomingbias node of the rat graph bsky.app/profile/star...
wait oh my god the great filter concept is from the sally-hemmings-consented-to-her-enslavement professor's blog what the fuck

for context this is overcomingbias, also on the diagram, and it was a blog with a total of like maybe twenty comments per post

moldbug was on OvercomingBias as a commenter around this same time so he's sort of always been baked into the community, he just wasn't very visible as anything but an odd screen name at the time

i really need to mine my overcomingbias comments because i suspect i said this way way back in the day
April 18, 2025 at 8:34 PM
it was always like this, i pulled ye olde overcomingbias comments a while ago and this was going strong in like 2006-2007

I was literally on overcomingbias during this period and all of these names were *meaningless* to me, they were just dudes in a comment section, it is just REALLY WEIRD when i go to grab archives from this that every third prominent commenter is now a famous neoreactionary

also shane legg and scott

this is the most accurate description of the degradation in quality, really old comments on overcomingbias are like 50% people who are realname posting many of whom are professors or otherwise notable people and the pseudonyms are also high quality. lesswrong is just notably much worse

specific irritant producing above pearl was some deckerstack quote tweet, which -- "say what you will about gentle silent rape . overcomingbias" -- lacks the originality of vision and autistic work ethic of the original master, so you're just left with the internet edgelordism. not great

also that the path the subculture took occurred under extremely specific initial conditions

you have a couple leftist computer scientists hanging around overcomingbias back in the day and by 2020 "is AGI synonymous with what marx meant by communism" is a common topic of discussion

old overcomingbias post which attempts to explain this kind of thing, but also squarely in the category of "things Yudkowsky said which his followers promptly ignored" which is why the author and date are amusing to me

lmao this is mostly overcomingbias but yes

what would being excessively hostile twenty years ago have accomplished, besides getting you banned from the overcomingbias comment section or whatever?

I want to time travel to 2007 when I was reading EY posts on OvercomingBias for the sole purpose of procrastination and scream at my past self "IT'S ALL REAL"

I thin Anissimov was gone before I ever heard about the rats, and not a whole lot of his stuff made it to LessWrong.

(I think LessWrong was seeded with posts and comments from OvercomingBias' WordPress?)
