This is not the precious red coral, but a postfire resprout of Ceratonia siliqua (Carob tree).
This color may serve to deter herbivory.

While postfire resprouting is common in this species, postfire recruitment is not that common

Some Ceanothus resprout (C. leucodermis, right), while others do not but recruit postfire (left; a "classical" seeder), which makes this genus very interesting for evolutionary biologists.

The post-fire seedling recruitment of the Carob tree (Ceratonia siliqua) that I observed 1 month after fire (left) is thriving 3 years later (right). It's not that common to see this regeneration.

Each wildfire is different.
In this one, the first plants to flower postfire seem to be Guillonea scabra (Apiaceae) and Daphne gnidium (Thymelaeaceae). It burned at the end of July (E Spain).

Byron Lamont has just sent me this pic of the spectacular flowering of grasstrees (Xanthorrhoea) in Western Australia burnt in March. Impressive spikes of up to 5 m tall.

Very odd: Google Maps has literally erased the Eaton Fire from their satellite maps. After correctly showing postfire images for all of 2025, it has--apparently manually--been reverted to show pre-fire images. No explanation has been given.
