One of my best friends is from a sleepy, wealthy small town in the south-west of Germany. He said, so many of my parents’ neighbours are rich and bored, with little to complain about, and they’ve radicalised themselves at dinner parties and online. In their aimlessness, they’ve bonded over hate.
This isn’t some rant saying “Germany has learned nothing from its past” - the reality is more subtle than that. Middle-class Germans live and travel with an incredible amount of ease and comfort, and they just got…sleepy. Many of them dismissed the far-right’s rage as just another set of complaints.

deep down i always consider Vance more dangerous than Trump because he is a genuine true believer in the postliberal project
There's some through-line in how he fell down the NatCon post-liberal rabbit hole, but Vance only became a professed MAGA guy when he ran for Senate in 2022! After the first term, after Jan 6, after the pandemic. He always has a whiff of overcompensation as if he's afraid people might remember that.

I struggle to express just how *weird* Vance’s #MSC2025 speech was. This is a transatlantic security conference, happening while there is a war in Europe, and the US is announcing a partial withdrawal from European security. And the US VP speaks about (alleged) threats to free speech in Europe??

i think the explanation is that Roberts is increasingly influenced by the postliberal Catholics
But ever since Trump v US (or maybe since Dobbs) he's stopped trying to maintain appearances and won't slow things down. The court's majority wants to do the most radical thing right now.
