Egoviruses: distant relatives of poxviruses abundant in the gut microbiome of humans and animals worldwide

Novel dsDNA viruses related to poxviruses in the gut - host unclear, but could be either the mammals themselves or a unicellular eukaryote in the gut

““Poxviruses love to mess with translation,” he said.

Cells infected by viruses sometimes try to shut down their protein factories to halt the production of new viruses. The poxviruses can use host proteins to restart them.”

As mpox surges, will it become endemic, or can its spread be beaten back? Declining immunity to poxviruses poses long-term challenges as cases rise in previously unaffected regions.

Really interesting preprint. There are lots of poxviruses out there that have zoonotic potential.
Also, the spillback risk of mpox into animals is a bit of a headache, too.
New preprint up! Really happy to have this study come together. We delve into predicting reservoirs of orthopoxviruses, including mpox virus, using ML models that integrate ecology and viral genomics 🦠🧬🐭

if you want to know why poxviruses are emerging suddenly, up until the 1980s, everyone on Earth was vaccinated for smallpox, and the poxvirus family is conservative. immunity to smallpox grants you immunity to other family members. its been 2 generations of vulnerable people now

A recombinant strain of mpox virus has been isolated from a patient in the UK containing fragments of clade I and clade II virus. Recombination occurs when two strains of virus infect a cell. These events tend to be rare but are well described in poxviruses.

Bonus: not a zoonosis but research on 🐬 ifx w C gattii in the PNW and on C gatti dispersal is fascinating! 🔗👇

Congrats Dr Annika Binder for a fantastic thesis and defense on microtubule binding proteins of #malaria #parasites exactly 25 years after I got my Dr for something with #actin and poxviruses and almost failed a question on, well, microtubule binding proteins.

and their work on poxviruses. I didn't feel too bad because my external examiner did not know who Luria and Bertani were either. Robin Weiss was a pioneer in virology and is most famous for his work on retroviruses and identifying CD4 on lymphocytes as the binding receptor for HIV.

I have a Ph.D. In Molecular Virology. I worked with poxviruses in my post doc.

This idiot is dangerous.
1/3 John Knox, anti-vaccine activist, is now acting head of ASPR -- the agency that handles pandemic response.

He’s called COVID vaccine campaigns “nothing other than genocide.” 😶

Not exactly reassuring...

The common name is because lesions of chickenpox looked as if a "Child had been picked by the Bills of chickens."

This has added to confusion, as smallpox and cowpox are taxonomically Poxviruses, but chickenpox is actually human herpesvirus 3, or varicella-zoster virus (VZV), and not a pox at all.

Back in 2010 we found transposable elements (TEs) can hop between widely diverged species, like bats and monkeys. We suspected large DNA viruses like poxviruses, which cross species boundaries, could act as vectors for transposons to hop into their genome.

Fortunately smallpox only exists in 2 places in the world (labs). Unfortunately one is the CDC & even more unfortunately this other is in Russia. Also it’s possible (but very, very difficult) to make poxviruses with synthetic biology. At least if smallpox does come back we’ll know it was a lab leak.

What I particularly like about this is that I worked on Arp2/3 mediated actin based motility of poxviruses during my PhD with @drmichaelway.bsky.social @embl.org. So 25 years seem to have passed in a wink... Arp2/3 was supposedly absent in Plasmodium but a simple pulldown changed our view.

Previously, KO and overexpression showed host RNA 5’ triphosphatase DUSP11 can reduce RIG-I sensitivity.

Here, we show poxviruses code for viral DUSP11 that can regulate host RNP III transcripts and RIG-I, providing evolutionary support DUSP11 can be pro-viral.
