Therapists also do their practicums and internships without being paid while also paying for the class credits. It’s why our student loans are so hefty.

completing two (of my last) practicums while simultaneously writing a dissertation and growing a human (20 weeks on saturday!! 💙) is… not for the faint of heart.

Having MSLIS students doing practicums @skeuomorphpress.org the past few semesters has been transformative.
1st, because librarians & librarians-in-training are generally awesome & 2nd, it’s helped ground the long list of "things we really need to do sometime" in specific, semester-scoped projects

bone practicums will have you point at chunks and saying some bs like 'that's the sella turcica of the sphenoid. oh that's obviously the crista galli of the ethmoid.' it's nonsense. what the hell is an acetabulum of the os coxa.wth is the coracoid process of the scapula?it sucks.

Counseling, or psychology. Graduate students provide a lot of gap coverage in areas already suffering from staff shortages while at the VA for internships and practicums. No money for students, no funding for interns, means increasing wait times for care.

Mi amiga es profe de pedagogía en la uni y ha suspendido a 16 alumnos de prácticas porque sus practicums tienen un 66% de ia.
El otro día una amiga dijo que los adolescentes de hoy son los que se sacarán la carrera de Medicina usando IA para todo y sin saber analizar nada por ellos mismos y no paro de darle vueltas porque es una perspectiva que me aterra.

Syllabi and Canvas pages for Spring are done! I'm teaching: Sci Fi film and lit, lit and the environment, intermediate fiction, and two one credit practicums. The sci fi class is new and I am JAZZED about all the weird stories we are going watch and read.

Thanks to @profmattdecarlo.bsky.social for doing the math on unpaid Social Work student practicums... Reasonable people can argue about how much investment practicum supervisors and their organizations make in students, but if things are going well students are not getting paid for useful work. 1/2

Even when you do have training for it, it's really not an appropriate role for an educator to fulfill. I would be instructor and supervisor for our students in their practicums - there's no way to be counselor on top of that. It's not ethical.
