#Praetextatus
Early Christian art did not emerge in a vacuum. For #SarcophagusSaturday, this piece from the Catacombs of #Praetextatus shows how C4 #Christian sarcophagi shared classical traditions and workshops with non-Christian ones. Just look at the heroic Daniel, a veritable Hercules. #AncientBluesky 🏺🧵

Reminds me of the story of Papirius Praetextatus. Teenager is allowed to accompany his dad to the Senate, where they're having a secret session. When he gets home his mom wants to know what the Senate was discussing and she keeps pressuring him for an answer...

Be careful what you wish for America!

The Devil went down to Georgia and he played his fiddle hard.

First Citizen of Ruin, Tyrannus Praetextatus is coming for you and everything you value. Not to keep it, but to burn it to the ground.

Wait, look at this!

This image was taken from the Praetextatus Catacombs in Rome. It depicts what is apparently Jesus Christ separating a donkey from a flock of sheep. The donkey apparently represents heresy or even Satan himself, while presumably the sheep are Christians.

Page 187:

"In the end, the fight came down not to rational arguments but crassly transactional politics. Ambrose had done more for Valentinian II than Symmachus or Praetextatus had—and he knew it."

Two surprising bug finds at home today. Rhyparachromus vulgaris (new to GB in 2010) actually in the house; and the very local Megalonotus praetextatus, running across the paving outside the front door! #bugs #truebugs #Hemiptera #KentNature

That time I approached a nice rock in the mountains of Shikoku, and the rock said "croak croak". 😂

I was delighted last night to learn there was a Saint Praetextatus. It's like being called St MacGuffin.

Fresco from the #Catacomb of Praetextatus in #Rome likely depicting the healing of the woman with the flow of blood (Matthew 9:20-22). The woman can be seen on the ground behind the two standing figures. Jesus is on the right (fragmentary)

A 3rd c. fresco from the catacomb of Praetextatus thought to be the earliest depiction of Jesus healing the woman with the flow of blood (Mk 5:25-34).

Jesus is the fragmentary figure on the right. The woman can be seen in the background reaching out to touch his robe. (Wilpert watercolor)

An arcosolium tomb in the Catacomb of Praetextatus in #Rome. Inscriptions identify the sheep and wolves as symbols of Susanna and the elders. The figure on the right is labeled "Liberius", probably the bishop of Rome from 352 to 366. (Wilpert watercolor)

1/2 #speciesaday no. 477 is Megalonotus praetextatus. Nationally scarce b. A shiny field-identifiable ground bug associated with storksbills on acid soils and cranesbills on base-rich soils and some coastal sites. Can be quite common on the Downs. Usually found by suction sampler.

Stray thought: medieval names are amazing and I’d love to see a kindy class full of kiddos named things like Radegund, Chilperic, Basina, Brunhild, Faileuba (FAILEUBA!), Clodosinda, Rigunth, and Dynamius. Theuderic. Praetextatus. Boso, Childebert, Fredegund.

Detail from a sarcophagus found in the catacomb of Praetextatus in #Rome showing Jesus raising someone from the dead (possibly the son of the widow from Nain? [Luke 7:11-17]). Note the little sarcophagus!

This painting by Lawrence Alma-Tadema (1836–1912) depicts Bishop Praetextatus of Rouen (r. 544-586) on his deathbed after the clergyman was attacked by an assailant with a knife on February 24, 586. For more info on the art and history, see our article here: thehistorianshut.com/2020/03/29/f...
