Like, the most "centrist" people in my shul smuggled prayerbooks past the Iron Curtain the anti authoritarian DNA is still pretty strong!
tbf also helps that Jews were already nominally left or left adjacent culturally

people used to go to bed early then wake up in the middle of the night and just do stuff for a couple hours, which we know in part bc we have some early modern prayerbooks specifically written for use during that time
what is the reverse historical dorito? the thing from the past that would blow our minds in a positive way

Also many many prayerbooks now, including all the standard non-Orthodox ones for decades, now, have omitted/changed those blessings to something better

so many people excited about the movie “babygirl” starring nicole kidman, but today I’m here to tell you about a special “baby boy” who, although he was the “kid” of “man,” was the son of god as well. Folks, let us open our prayerbooks to

Story.

So you have to understand that there's a standard Prayer for the Royal Family inserted into Anglo-Orthodox prayerbooks. It begins "He who giveth salvation unto kings and dominion unto princes, Whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom…"

1/8
I am hoping the second line is approximately coherent and intelligible

When my mother was at the end of her life, a friend who'd lost her father recently recommended a shiva g'mach called Misaskim. They came over the day I asked and brought low chairs for mourners' sitting (a shiva custom), memorial candles, prayerbooks, etc. Then they came again to pick it all up.

"also some of the prayerbooks that list Rachel first end with 'v'ezrat Sarah' and some end with 'ufokeid Sarah' (and add 'fokeid' into the previous line, too) and that's not even touching the prayerbooks that don't include or provide the option of not including the matriarchs at all..."

me at the shiva explaining to my Gentile fiancée: "so the minyan stumbled THERE because most prayerbooks with the matriarchs list Rachel then Leah but this was the opposite, & THERE because the book said hakol but some said hameitim, & THERE because some said v'al kol yoshvei teivel & some didn't"

Following on Burman and Fennetaux's great book on the history of women's pockets, I'd like to see research into the persistence of clasps on prayerbooks and how/whether that helped books last inside pockets and reticules.

Happy #Easter! A recent charity shop find: this teeny tiny #hymn book, to add to my collection of vintage and antique English prayerbooks and hymnbooks. It fits in the palm of my hand (pound coin for scale). Opened to 'Ye Choirs of New Jerusalem' for Easter Day.

There's another nest of prayerbooks left from among the court women just a hair later, and those have gotten a bit of attention, but only a bit, and no comparison with the earlier clerical books.

I fear I am destined to be one of those elderly Episcopalians who complains about changes to the liturgy and insists that previous Prayerbooks were better
