In a previous post, I mentioned the slow-pace of working with archives. Reading through metres of paper is however anything but boring. Besides finding material for our research we often find extremel...

Grand claims require verifiable + transparent evidence; "trust me bro they are capable engineers" is not it.
"The agents were capable engineers, conducting experiments, reviewing literature and writing clean code, but struggled with research judgement, creativity and knowing when to change course."

Applies to every human endeavour: arts, crafts, science. If we cut a generation of people from learning their craft (for scientists & scholars: reading, writing, understanding what others have done before), we ffd. #resistAI What's that you say? It's telling how government officials, university boards, & company admins are wooed by this. "It's technology, a "tool" (it is not), we must rush into it." Those jumping on the wagon have done nothing of substance towards a fair & equitable society. Selling smoke screens is their trade. #resistAI
This graphic illustrates Canada's new "AI for all" policy. The inner circle that says "ADOPTION > ADOPTION > ADOPTION" is literal insanity and summarizes everything wrong with this policy. ised-isde.canada.ca/site/ised/en...

I really appreciate this initiative, and I already peer review for diamond OA journals and am on the editorial board for one, but I think the info on the webpage conflates OA costs (free to read and publish) and other open research values. Not all diamond OA journals are scholar led for instance.
Peer review is a gift researchers give to the field, worth >$1B globally in 2020. Imagine if more of that generosity flowed straight back into the scholar-led journals that make research free to read and free to publish. Help build that future, become a diamond reviewer forrt.org/diamond-reviewer
