I've seen some writers on the pre-raphaelites say that Jane Burden/Morris was "homely" irl compared to her Rossettified incarnations in the portraits, but like - idk, I understand Rossetti and Morris, I would've also fallen in love with her instantly.

I realise my favourite kind of paintings have - irrespective of year - is 1. Pretty girl (obv) 2. Something magical/fantastical and 3. Water. Sea or river.

No wonder the pre-raphaelites are so obssessed over both in my heart and in the wider world; they did all 3 very often.

Since I don’t see much resemblance to Mucha, I disagree. Anyway, to me, Crane’s work always looked like Crane’s work, i.e., like what you see on that cover. His main influence is the Pre-Raphaelites. Also, when Crane (1845-1915) was 20, Mucha (1860-1939) was 5, and when Mucha was 20, Crane was 35!

The English artist Ford Madox Brown was an associate of the Pre-Raphaelites, although not a full member of the Brotherhood. He believed that art should be true to nature and morally instructive. He also believed in the dignity of labor. His painting “Work” is a crowded street scene filled with people from all walks of life. He includes the fashionable and the downtrodden: a flower seller in rags and no shoes; women in fancy dresses and bonnets (the lady on the left with the blue-green parasol is a portrait of his own wife); a young girl trying to keep her younger siblings in line (she grabs her brother’s ear while holding a toddler); laborers; scholars; beer-drinkers and more. There are dogs and cats and horses. “Work” is a commentary on Victorian society’s transitioning from rural to urban. The center of Brown’s composition shows men working on street repair, digging tunnels and diverting traffic to the crowded left side of the painting. On the right, he shows an uncrowded winding road with a few workers sleeping in a ditch. Also on the right are two well-dressed men serving as observers (these are portraits of specific social reformers). London at this time did not have an integrated sanitary sewer system and outbreaks of cholera and typhus were frequent disasters; the integrated system was begun a few years later, in 1858, but would not be completed until the mid-1870s. Perhaps the roadwork depicted was an effort to alleviate some of the standing conditions that made life in London in the 1850s so difficult for many. Brown brings all of this activity to life with an uncompromising realism.
