#Pre-Raphaelitism
'Dutch Girl.' (1899) Marianne Stokes' place amongst important women artists is not confined to those who were followers of Pre-Raphaelitism, she was a pre-eminent painter in tempera and did much to revive its popularity in the late 19thC and the early years of the 20thC.

I am BEGGING people to read about Pre-Raphaelitism & medievalism (and play, for that matter) before rehashing commonplaces about escapism and dressing up.

Autumn Leaves (1856) by John Everett Millais. English Pre-Raphaelite artist, lived 1829–1896. Manchester Art Gallery. The point where Pre-Raphaelitism begins to emphasis beauty, colour, mood, and visual sensation. I can smell those burning leaves from here.

This is a small watercolour by the Victorian artist G A Storey-which I have had it for many years. It is a copy of Fra Angelico angels, done in the spirit of Pre-Raphaelitism.
Storey himself often used to dress as a monk #Christmas/Renaissance

I beg of you, please let me get this extremely wordy paper for @navsa2025.bsky.social under 20 minutes. I swear it’s necessary for me to say “second phase Pre-Raphaelitism” this many times…

My final chapter focused on modern evocations of the "Pre-Raphaelite", looking at high-fashion hair/makeup design + interest in and influence of Pre-Raph model Fanny Eaton + #preraphaelite as an internet aesthetic + queer readings + postfeminism. Essentially why Pre-Raphaelitism is relevent today!

She depicted women as independent, confident individuals. Her subjects ranged well beyond those deemed feminine, such as domestic scenes and flora. She incorporated aspects of Neoclassicism, Pre-Raphaelitism and Impressionism, but was not bound by them. 2/9
