Look at this excellent handkerchief from 1769 at the V & A museum: a showcase for #18thc practices of remediation. Made to imitate a quodlibet/medley print, a genre that itself aims to simulate, in a trompe l'oeil idiom, a scatter of small printed papers.
Imagine blowing your nose on that!

Yes, someone SHOULD be exploring early modern #printingonfabric! 😁
In this image, the text the angels are holding seems to be printed on a soft piece of fabric rather than something more rigid like paper or stone. Maybe the history of using fabric or silk as a medium for printed information is something that still needs to be explored… #printonsilk #bookhistory
Lately I’ve been diving deep into Rubens’ frontispieces — and here’s a gem from my collection: the Generale Kerckelijcke Historie (Antwerp, 1623), with a monumental title page designed by Peter Paul Rubens and engraved by Lucas Vorsterman.

Should I Wear THIS to My Exhibition Opening?

Getting a bit ahead of myself, but if I turn the book in TODAY, I'll have until December 10, 2026 to figure out how to do it! (I already know Spoonflower can help make me a multiple Veronica fabric...)

Not Giving Up My Shot

Learned recently that while all of these are plain weave fabrics, one is mysteriously and beautifully called "changeable" shot silk in early modern parlance! 🥰

And yes, the book IS due to copyediting this week, why do you ask? 🤣

More Fun With Fabrics!

Book *might* get turned in today... Focusing on the slightly details, like less shiny but serviceable Cotton. Still chuffed that I can identify the (plain) weave! Once the book goes on its merry way we'll celebrate with satin!

Posh, Political, and Protective

Some of the Silk, Silk, Linen, and Paper printed materials going into my Printing on Fabric show in December 2026! Thrilled I was able to share them and the intro catalogue chapter (virtually) with a grad student class last week! #PrintingOnFabric #NewberryLibrary

One of these is a reproduction, but both are printed on textile and hand colored!

We cut our thrifted shirts out of the sewn seams so we have flat pieces of fabric to print on. Our Lino sheets are about 12”x19” to fit on our manual press bed. #printingonfabric #textileprint #surfacedesign #repurposedtextiles #thereprintery #garmentsewing #sustainabletextiles
