THE FOURTH DESCENT — FETAL MALNUTRITION Page 37 As I have written again and again, how what happens to us prenatally is interpreted is all important and that interpretation is influenced by our knowledge of what is supposed to happen. Swami Guru Muktananda (1974), in his autobiography, said he “hopped like a frog” in his spiritual “practice.” However, he might have related it instead to a time as a fetus, kicking in the womb, or at birth, pushing with his legs to get out ... that is to say, in re-experiencing it, like he wished he could but was not able to do at that time ... or even cellularly, where in re-experiencing our time as a sperm one will kick frantically in a way like the sperm does to propel itself via its long tail. That is, Muktananda might have interpreted his experience that way, instead of describing it as being frog-like, if he had known such possibilities of re-experiencing early events exist. Can re-experiencers make such a misattribution? Absolutely, yes. In the course of a session, experiences come one upon the other, often. And fractals of a feeling are mixed with times both before and after the time one thinks one is re-experiencing. It is the feeling that is the central quality and determines what will be experienced. The feeling is the core and draws to it various events, which happened at different times, which contain that same core feeling or trauma. These are feeling complexes; Janov used the term compound feelings to describe this tendency to feel earlier and later fractals of the same…

It is the feeling that is the central quality and determines what will be experienced. The feeling is the core and draws to it various events, which happened at different times, which contain that same core feeling or trauma. These are feeling complexes; Janov used the term compound feelings to describe this tendency to feel earlier and later fractals of the same feeling as occurring either simultaneously, with one feeling overlying and often mixed with another, or happening in close temporal proximity to each other. Thus, often the exact time of the experience one is reliving must be deduced. There were no wristwatches in the womb. Nor did we have graphs on the womb walls of prenatal and postnatal development nor charts of the events that usually occur then. Yet, there is the fact that fetal malnutrition is externally observable and measurable, not simply deduced from sessions of re- experiencers. It does exist and is calculated in terms of the weight of the fetus over that period of time and has been measured related to the heel-to-crown size of the fetus. There would seem to have had to have been a huge emotional corollary to an event of such an incredibly profound impact on a prenate’s development that it would actually slow down, practically halting, its growth. Imagine how much one would have to starve oneself or suffocate oneself when one is growing as a child or an adolescent to bring that about. Sure, it… THE FOURTH DESCENT — FETAL MALNUTRITION Page 37

He says that we are born into the mother’s feces, which are released at the time of birth. While it is no doubt true that happens if the mother does not receive the standard pre- birth enema needed, the mother does have this taken care of in any of our modern times. Hence, how clients could be experiencing wallowing in shit and other filth is hard to understand, unless one does, as Grof is wont to do, attribute it to the transpersonal facet of the perinatal matrix or constellation of events. This is saying that he would attribute the existence of such filth around the time of birth, when it did not happen in that individual’s actual life, to the fact that it presumably has happened for the vast majority of humans for the greatest extent of our time as a species. Additionally, he might bring in archetypal elements — such as those involving filthy, disgusting hells and murderous, blood-thirsty mother and evil goddess figures — to explain it. This application of arche- typal understandings is saying that Grof might, for example, relate it to the archetype of Mother Kali, from Indian literature, or to any of the other fiercesome mother archetypes, as well as to ideas about hell which involve it being dirty, revolting, and involving burning or fire.

This pain shows up quite a bit in Grof’s work where he, and I assume the client, mistakenly relate it to earlier in the womb. This no doubt is often the case and sadly has increased in modern times: We are sickened and traumatized earlier in the womb when our mother consumes or breathes in toxins — be they from smoking, from drink- ing alcohol, from ingestion of drugs and pharmaceuticals, from inhala- tion of polluted and toxic air, or from consumption of toxic, additive-ridden food. However, I submit that it happens to us all, virtually, except for very early premies being born prior to that eventful last month. And it is not merely the result of what the mother ingests, but it is a consequence of what the mother is breathing and eating not getting to the fetus sufficiently, because of a constricted blood flow, and along with that, on the egress side of fetal dining, the prenate’s byproducts of food conversion not being removed as efficiently. THE FOURTH DESCENT — FETAL MALNUTRITION Page 35 I am not alone in asserting this. In fact, my earliest ideas about this, outside of the experiences of it in primal re-experience I had two decades previous to reading about it, came to me via Lloyd deMause (1982, 2002) in his important works. He sums up these experiences with the term, the suffering fetus, and he proposes as the reason for our trauma that we are connected to our mothers through a poisonous placenta. A sidenote: Some prenatal and perinatal psychologists question the existence of this pain. Thomas Verny, a primal therapist and the author of The Secret Life of the Unborn Child (1981), is reported to have said he never heard of such trauma around fetal malnutrition being described as occurring in the course of the primal therapy that he, and other primal therapists, facilitated in people. However, I contend that the reason they have not is that they are confusing the pain of this time with two other times perinatally — earlier in the womb, as I have stated ... and at the time of birth. In addition, I can tell you I re- experienced it. Furthermore, the re-experience of it comes only after many years of primal re-experience of easier to integrate traumas, and few people stay with this kind of inner journeying and healing that long, as I have. This pain shows up quite a bit in Grof’s work where he, and I assume the client, mistakenly relate it to earlier in the womb.

Subsequently, other modalities arose allowing non-drug access to and reliving of this time in utero for some people. I am one of them. The paramount researcher in the LSD-assisted as well as non- drug exploration of these early times is Stanislav Grof.2 Grof’s particular portrayal of this pain, based on his extensive research, subsumes such trauma of the last four weeks under a category of perinatal events that can occur earlier in the womb, having to do with toxins ingested by the fetus because of what the mother takes in during that time. His theory holds that if the intake of air, food, and drugs by the mother is ideal, that is, relatively non-toxic, this kind of prenatal pain of poisoning and “sickness” does not occur. My posi- tion on this is that he has misattributed this prenatal pain and that, instead, it occurs virtually to all of us in those last four weeks and has characteristics of suffocation, poisoning, and skin irritation or “burning.” PRODIGAL HUMAN Page 34

PRODIGAL HUMAN Page 34 …us. With this we experience a situation something like a bath in slightly acidic water. And that feels like a kind of burning on our deli- cate skin surfaces. It is an irritation not alleviated till after birth. This is what I have termed, prenatal irritation or prenatal burning. As I said, the fetus is starving and suffocating in there in the last four weeks of its gestation, which is prenatal suffocation or prenatal gasping. Furthermore, it experiences prenatal irritation or burning, from the toxins in its surround. And along with the rest it feels something like a sickening or poisoning — what I have termed prena- tal disgust or prenatal revulsion — caused by the backup of toxins affecting how it feels about what is coming into it, not just in its surround. How We Know How Fetuses Feel Most of us can only imagine the unbelievable trauma involved in this. Indeed, we might not have even recognized the traumatic nature of this development of fetal malnutrition if it were not for the fact that over the course of the last sixty years, since the experimentation that began with LSD in the Fifties, there have been people who have re- experienced parts of this time.

So in most situations the prenate is not getting enough nutrition to grow at its previous pace. However, remember that the fetus does not breathe air like it will later. It gets all its oxygen through the arteries coming to it from the placenta. Therefore it will be starved for oxygen along with all other nutrients. Conceivably, with oxygen being the primary nutrient required for life, this prenatal suffocation has at least as much, if not considerably more, influence on the growth of the prenate. Concomitant with this reduction of resources, the blood flow necessary to remove the byproducts of food conversion is itself im- paired. With a backing up of toxins, this way, there is a buildup of noxious substances in the fetal surround. The fetus feels itself not just hungry and “gasping,” but poisoned and irritated as well. We experience feelings of being force-fed impurities, with our impurities being inadequately removed. This leads to a complex of feelings that are kind of a prenatal disgust. I call this prenatal revulsion. In addition, with the fresh sensitivity of newly acquired and unimpaired senses, we feel this toxicity around us, not just being fed… THE FOURTH DESCENT — FETAL MALNUTRITION Page 33

THE FOURTH DESCENT — FETAL MALNUTRITION Page 33 Those are the effects on blood flow when the mother is lying down on her back; yet standing upright, there is a similar impairment of blood flow to the placenta. Briend points out that in a mother’s being up and about, the effects of gravity, that is to say, of the weight of the fetus on the mother’s internal system, has a negative effect on the hydrostatic pressure in the veins. Both of these factors of reduced arterial and decreased blood flow in the veins are especially impactful for the growth of the prenate during the last few weeks of gestation. The conclusion is that uprightness of posture had adverse effects on the neonate and its mother at birth, in creating the most difficult births of humans among all planetmates; but also in the last month of gestation, in creating such a reduction in the flow of oxygen and nutrients to the fetus as to cause it to radically abate its ability to continue growing. Veins which remove the waste products of food conversion are pressed upon as well. With blood vessels compressed, blood flow to the fetus is reduced, while the mother is standing, especially, but in other positions as well, except the lateral position. This involves lying on one’s side, hence it is not a position frequently adopted.

In the supine position, lying on one’s back, face up, the arteries that go down along the lumbar spine, which are the vena cava and the aorta, are compressed. As Briend explains, compression of the aorta causes a drop in arterial blood pressure distal to the lumbar lordosis. This directly impacts the nutrition of the prenate, in that it reduces blood flow involving the uterus. Additionally, pressure on the inferior vena cava causes a reduction in blood volume and a decrease of cardiac output. This is highly significant for the fetus in that both of these, blood volume and cardiac output, prior to this in the prenate’s gestation, had been substantially increased to facilitate the prenate’s extraordinary development. While much bed rest, and in a lateral position, would help, this is not only hardly allowed — let alone is it even common knowledge that this would be advantageous — it is impractical; it is virtually impossible.

As Briend explains it, becoming bipedal did more than make birth more difficult for humans, which scientists commonly acknow- ledge, it caused the lower lumbar of the vertebrae and the sacrum to be thrust forward. This unique human skeletal modification reduced the space in the female body for the uterus and resulted in a significant interference with maternal hemodynamics, that is to say, blood flow. Specifically, when the mother is lying down or standing this reduction in blood flow is pronounced. It is only alleviated somewhat when the mother is lying down and in a lateral position, which is to say when she is lying down on her side. Now, this is rarely the case. THE FOURTH DESCENT — FETAL MALNUTRITION Page 31 Why? Well, what happens is a direct result of bipedalism. Whereas primate young, whose parents go about on four legs, hang loosely underneath the mother’s torso in her normal posture of standing on four legs, the weight of human prenates sits smack atop several arteries and veins important for the fetuses health.

Prenatal Suffocation and Starvation ... Fetal Malnutrition Fetal malnutrition is one such development that happened concurrently with birth trauma and prematurity, with its resulting secondary altriciality. Andre Briend (1979) brought this to our attention relatively re- cently as our evolutionary science goes.1 What it basically means is that during the last month of gestation the growth of the prenate, as measured by its weight, slows down, levels off. The way this looks on a chart is that the curve of growth, undeterred and relatively perfect in its progression for the first eight months, begins to flatten out. The fetus is no longer growing optimally, as it had been. PRODIGAL HUMAN Page 30

Superiority Is Our Defense Against Our Felt Inferiority Regardless, we will increasingly build up this superiority defense and its resulting Ego for the purpose of beating back the otherwise debilitating feelings of insecurity and inferiority. We have a confused and unsteady consciousness, creating an alternate reality from Nature. Wordism The result is a situation akin to what Plato described in his “Allegory of the Cave.” For the result is that words suffuse our minds and distract us from actual Reality with a non-stop stream of nonsensical repetitions of word symbols. We tout our wordism as a supreme accomplishment, instead of the aberration, the flaw in our reality perceptors, that it actually is. This causes us to never really hear or understand each other. For these word symbols not only imprison and isolate us in a world of swirling bookmarks of Reality, but they are tagged to but dimly reflective of Reality. PRODIGAL HUMAN Page 52

However, such feelings require a compensatory mechanism. That compensatory mechanism is Ego — quite different from the self of other beings in Nature. For Ego is comprised of the compensatory mechanisms of denial, inflation of self, and superiority vis–à–vis Nature, the All That Is, and Nature-God Itself.2 Ego Tells Us We are Superior to Nature Part of this repression and compensation means that impairments that we have because of our unique birth and insufficient satisfaction of early needs, such as language, will be touted as proof of our superiority over Nature. We have no inkling that the superiority belief is a result of our prematurity and its consequences of uncomfortable feelings of insecurity and inferiority. We create a duality between us and Nature, us and other people ... and in terms of how this comes out later in rampant misogyny, between us and women, if we are male.” While many of our descents occurred over time, in a historical progression, one following the other, others happened concurrently, or else we have no way of knowing which development came earlier than another. When they developed together or around the same time, for the most part, in ordering these descents of man, I put the… THE FOURTH DESCENT — FETAL MALNUTRITION Page 29
