Prenatal Suffocation and Starvation ... Fetal Malnutrition Fetal malnutrition is one such development that happened concurrently with birth trauma and prematurity, with its resulting secondary altriciality. Andre Briend (1979) brought this to our attention relatively re- cently as our evolutionary science goes.1 What it basically means is that during the last month of gestation the growth of the prenate, as measured by its weight, slows down, levels off. The way this looks on a chart is that the curve of growth, undeterred and relatively perfect in its progression for the first eight months, begins to flatten out. The fetus is no longer growing optimally, as it had been. PRODIGAL HUMAN Page 30

For example, he relates basic biological, cellular events to biblical events described in Genesis. He also relates male and female adult behavior to basic patterns of sperm and egg behavior and to events prior to and surrounding conception. He has said that male and female behavior are just sperm and egg activity grown up! PRE/PERINATAL PSYCHOLOGY AND PHENOMENON OF RE-EXPERIENCE Page 27

The Universe Is You “Away From the Things of Man” And the result, the happy outcome of the Tao of Funny God? Perhaps not immediately but in time, it leaves open the possibility of a radically new mode of engagement with life and the world, a new paradigm of experience, if you will. As symbolized in the movie about Joe, for example, in the end, Joe and Patricia are floating in the middle of a wide open sea — signifying the immensity of potentiality that is now open. They are facing that gigantic moon on the horizon — symbolizing the beneficent nature of the Universe to which they are opening, that is, it is beautiful and lit with possibilities. FUNNY GOD Page 62

EXPERIENCE IS DIVINITY Page 42 …naïve are our expectations and how crude the instruments we use to detect other life forms. For they all are built on an expectation of finding beings that are at least somewhat like ourselves. You say, no, our scientists are not assuming other beings of high consciousness would look like us. But you should know I mean that in our scientists saying what are the building blocks of life — water, and so on — they are showing a bias about “life” that it is something like what we know. Notice also that even the idea of a “higher” level of consciousness itself has its roots in this idea that a human consciousness is superior to other kinds we know of. So these assumptions built into our science are laughable in their arrogance. Meanwhile, in understanding how limited and relative is our human perspective, we are able to imagine other possibilities for life and its variations. We begin to approach the perspectives of mystics. We begin to understand how it is not outside the realm of possibility that even what we consider non-life and inanimate to be somehow conscious or a form of consciousness, even if we cannot call it “life” — which is, we see now, itself part of our limited species interpretation.

THE TAO OF FUNNY GOD, MATRIARCHY, AND LUNAR THEOLOGIES Page 63 They are seen sitting on only their luggage — symbolizing the “stripped down” nature of the self; that is, it is stripped of ego trappings of status, vainglory, defenses, and so on. Sitting on this raft, of sorts, they are unable to steer or to determine its course, any more than funny god activists or lunar adepts are able to foresee, let alone determine, where they will end up. Joe and Patricia do not sail off into life, as in virtually all depictions of happily-ever-afters. No. They float off into it. They will go where the Universe, where the currents of life will take them. They have embraced the uncertainty and exigencies of life. As Jeffrey Lewis phrased it, in expressing the proper advice in handling the chaotic experience of a psychedelic, “turn off your mind and float downstream.”1 Our heroes do not know where they will end up. “Where should we go?” is responded to with “Away from the things of man, my love. Away from the things of man.” This is the final comment at the very end of the film. They do not know exactly where they will go but only that wherever it is it will be “away from the things of man.” This phrase indicates their desire to never go back to the drama of ego and its puerile catacomb pathways of darkened experience.

Now, D’Andrade is saying that not all realities are culturally constituted and that there are realities that are independent of culture, and about which all cultures must make determinations and interpretations or with which they must at least interact. The examples he gives of such realities include things like a person’s age, the number of calories in a meal, the number of chairs in a place, and the pain a person feels. Total Heritage View of Culture Sees It as the Matrix D’Andrade is speaking to and critiquing a “total heritage” view of culture, espoused by some anthropologists, which holds that all reality is culturally determined ... or constituted ... including such “brute facts.” In the total-heritage view — espoused in particular by Marshall Sahlins (1976) — even the things we think to be irreducible or independent of cultural interpretations are indeed created by and patterned by ... “constituted” by ... culture.

But back then, it was an advantage to be by the sea. We were still planetmates and Earth Citizens, of course, and we belonged in Nature. We retained our planetmate nobility and took our honored spot in the ecosystem of Gaia. We were still in Eden, so to speak. Then a fateful development ensued. Our First Split with Nature Began When We Stood Up You see, in the water there is a huge advantage in foraging to be able to raise oneself up on one’s hind legs. One could go out further in the water, much further. Naturally, those that did increased their success in acquiring food. They survived; they reproduced. They won out in the process of natural selection. There was an even greater advantage attached to water in terms of safety from predators. Again, wading out as far as possible brought the greatest security. For both reasons, over time our primate ancestors found it increasingly advantageous to stand up. And not just to stand up, but to stay up! THE DESCENTS OF MAN Page 3

So simply by not assuming we are the pinnacle of creation and acknowledging that, for example, a dog really does have more accurate smelling ability and an eagle a greater ability to see, and imagining what that would mean for us or keeping that in mind, we come to an appreciation of ourselves as a part of Nature, not a ruler of Nature; just as in our understandings of the realities-subjectivities-feelings of other humans led us to know that we are not rulers of other people; just as our understanding of other cultures have led us to know that one culture is not better, superior to, or more dominant over another. The conclusions from all this understanding is that our sciences are important in establishing facts and reality, but the ones they come up with are only relative to our species, not necessarily to any other species, and not necessarily do they give us a true idea of What Really Is. Scientific Arrogance Is Laughable You think this is irrelevant to know? Well, to give just one example, think of all our forays into space and our imaginings of other beings from other than this planet. If you take the perspective that I am encouraging here, you will notice how astoundingly… TRANSCENDING WORLDS Page 41

INTRODUCTION Page 4 And for long periods of time. Considering the reasons — food acquisition and safety from predators, which both involve survival and with one of them being extra motivating to endure long periods of uprightness so as to avoid a ghastly and brutal end — there was huge incentive to stay out in the water for extensive lengths of time, standing. And to avoid being eaten as well as to get the best things for eating, oftentimes it was the most benefit to be standing as far out in the water as could be, with only one’s head above the surface. At first we were practicing our new skill of keeping our “chins up” (old chum) only in water. Eventually, for other reasons we found it helpful to be bipedal on land as well. These included keeping one’s hands and arms available for carrying an infant, for with our loss of hair ... oh, did I fail to mention that? ... yes, we lost our hair like all other mammals who go out to sea ... and I assure you, we were not the first. Anyway, with our loss of hair, infants could no longer hold onto fur, as our primate relatives do. Furthermore, with humans being born more helpless than our cousins and staying that way for a longer period of time after birth, our very young ones were not developed enough to cling anyway. We’ll get into that shortly, with prematurity of birth and secondary altriciality.

I explained that, while he didn’t have to prove anything anymore to his father that, while he was doing it, it led him to learn a lot about the internet and such, and he could apply that to something new. 2. ACTIVISM, NUCLEAR, AND INSANITY Page 19 On the other hand, if at the end of the month you were paying six bucks a gallon wouldn’t you have significant motivation to restrain yourself? Well this is how it worked out in the early Eighties with lifeline rates and Oregon Fair Share. It was a small, but important and long-standing, victory. We were able to cut back the size of the utility bill folks would pay — and it is still a modest amount, even today, I can tell you — while doing something to help the environment by restraining the overconsumption of electricity. I can guarantee you the big operators, who had had it good with cheap electricity, found all kinds of ways to conserve and use less, once they had to pay their fair share. Nuclear When I was canvassing for Oregon Fair Share, we canvassed on that issue, utility rates, lifeline rates, using it as an example, to the folks we’d talk to at the door, of the benefits of strength in numbers ... and how that worked in tackling the large issues. However, the major issue we were working on was the nuclear one. I don’t need to lay out the dangers of nuclear weapons, nuclear waste, and such to you, I know. Yet keep in mind, nuclear weapons could hardly be tackled as a local issue.

FALLS FROM GRACE Page 26 Michael C. Irving Primal Therapy, Birth, Sperm, Egg, Myth, Dragon Symbolism, Prehistoric Cult and Ritual Michael C. Irving is a primal therapist whose contributions include his relation of these earliest events from sperm and egg through the birth experience to fundamental mythological motifs and images across cultures. The originator of a way of interpretation that he calls natalism, he has brought together a host of artistic and artifactual images from a wide range of time periods and cultures which relate, with an astonishing degree of accuracy, to actual pre- and perinatal events. In particular, he has traced the universal serpent/dragon motifs and mythology to birth and sperm experience, noting, among other things, that the serpent/dragon shape represents the birth canal or tunnel, that the fire-spewing characteristics of dragons relate to consuming pain, and that the constricting characteristics of snakes correspond to the constriction of the birth canal.

Biological Transcendence It follows that to understand truth beyond our biologically constituted realities ... to be able to get an idea of what reality might be for entities and life in general and not just humans, we would need to stand inside a paradigm of understanding that would apply to all species — both known and unknown. We would need to take a stance on the foundation of a trans-species perspective — that is, what is true for all species, not just humans. This is what science says it is attempting to do, but it actually does not. Because we have found that sciences can only look in areas that we as humans ahead of time have an idea that something might be. In other words, science is an extension of our senses. So to do more, we have to expand our imagination to include what might be the perspectives of other species ... other planetmates. This is what we our doing with our planetmate consciousness ... our Planetmate… EXPERIENCE IS DIVINITY Page 40

Whatever it is, it would necessarily be Truth, or truths, far beyond what we come up with enslaved as we are within the boundaries of concepts formed from our early, our profoundly influential, experiences. An example? What is the reality we experience before we have the one of duality when we come into Form as cells, as sperm and ovum? When we experience not just separation, from father and mother, but then duality in the coming together of the two at conception? At that point we have laid — through the experiences we have had there of duality — a foundation for seeing all the rest of the Reality we will experience in life in terms of male and female, separation and union, struggle and peace, pleasure and pain, satisfaction and discontent, inner and outer, and all the rest. But what was Reality before we stamped that particular cookie cutter on Reality? What was the bigger “game” or the larger reality outside the game before those rules of consensual reality, involving dualism, were initiated? At this point we are metaphorically looking for what the “room” looks like that we are sitting in when we are playing the board or virtual reality game of life. What is the “setting” like? What are we like? Who else… PREFACE. A DANCE OF THE SEVEN VEILS Page xxxiii

Yet these ways of doing things are put on their head in an environ- mental crisis. What do you do when the best thing, the only sane thing, is actually to encourage folks to consume less? Also, this was a public utility, keep in mind. We needed to ask folks, why in hell does a public utility, a monopoly, need to maximize profits? Why not just enough to cover operating expenses and wages? And here we came up against another common notion of a capitalistic society: Which is that the other goal, outside of buying as much as one could, is to make as much as one can ... of money. So greed and consumption are the two and only goals in this capitalist model. What Oregon Fair Share had to do was to get the utility to see things differently and change its rates. But first they had to get the community out of its mindset. Believe me, most folks, regardless of the benefit to themselves in having lower rates, simply could not see the issue outside of the box in which they were trained to think: That is, that consuming more should reap a reward, which would encourage more consumption. Think about the environmental consequences of this. If you were able to pay less per gallon of gas the more you drove your car ... so that at the end of the month, you could be paying fifty cents a gallon, say ... would you not then drive your car a lot more and waste a lot more gas? DANCE OF THE SEVEN VEILS II Page xxxiv …is there and what are they like? What does it feel like? What is it all about at that “level”? And more — anything else we will find out when we have removed more than just vanity from our prejudices, but also the formative early experiences, many of them painful, which give rise to all the other prejudices on our perception. In my works, we pull back at least these seven Veils across Naked Reality, in order to perceive the Truth ec-static, out of Form, untainted, unsullied, in Itself, non-skewed and unslanted and unprejudiced: We need remove, first, the Veil of vanity and Ego of species, i.e., anthropocentrism (see The Secret Life of Stones and Veil One of this work, which is in Dance of the Seven Veils I); second, that of cultural identity (see Veil Two of that same book); third, that of personal, primal pain (see Veil Three of that book preceding this one); fourth, that of prenatal and perinatal pain and their mythological-archetypal correlates (see Veils Four, Five, and Six, which are in this, the second, volume of Dance of the Seven Veils); fifth, that of cellular experience and its Form-ular constructions of world (see Veil Seven, in the third book of this); and sixth, that of our biology itself as a species, human, which determines a human Veil, in distinction to all others (see Veil Seven, Dance of the Seven Veils III, as well as my forthcoming work, Cells with a View). Finally, as I explain in The Secret Life of Stones and will explore even further in Dance of the Seven Veils III, there remains a Veil, a conscious one. It is another Veil that is not a veil for it is chosen, transparent, and conscious.
