Another quick movement of a Wigeon from the #LDV as part of #ProjectPenelope - an individual ringed at Wheldrake Ings on the 2nd December 2024 was found at Kirkby Stephen, Cumbria on the 13th January 2025 - 114 km west in 42 days - perhaps moving out of the area during the recent freeze ❄️

Nice to hear about another of our #ProjectPenelope Wigeon, with this individual making a quick movement from the #LDV to WWT Slimbridge. With over 11,500 Wigeon present across the reserve at the moment, we're left wondering just how many must use the site over the course of a winter.
A nice movement from this colour ringed Wigeon seen at Slimbridge Monday. Originally ringed just 26 days before in the Lower Derwent Valley. @slimbridge-wild.bsky.social

A drake Wigeon ringed at Bank Island in November 2021 was recovered in Denmark on the 31st October 2024 - representing the first #ProjectPenelope bird to be recovered there (although the 15th Wigeon ringed in the #LDV to have been recovered in Denmark) @yorkbirding.bsky.social

Our ringing team have been busy colour-ringing another 100 Wigeon over the last couple of weeks as part of #ProjectPenelope. When visiting the #LDV please keep an eye out for any colour-ringed Wigeon feeding on the grass or bunds around the reserve @yorkbirding.bsky.social
