#Proofreader
Today is the 2nd anniversary of me becoming a freelance editor and proofreader

It's fair to say things are pretty tough right now, with AI being a significant threat

I wrote down a few reflections while if you need my services, you know where to find me...

You specialize in books about birds? That is remarkable. I am a CE and proofreader and I am also a birder but the two things have next to no overlap. #StetChat

A5: My publishing program graduated generalists, so when I first started freelancing, I offered everything—editing, proofreading, indexing, consulting, design.

Design never took off for me, so I stopped. I wrote about giving up design here: ivacheung.com/2022/04/bye-...

Please get a proofreader for your means. It's "imminent" death. I don't repost misspelled memes, nor those with bad grammar, because a lot of folks like me will discount or ignore memes with bad spelling or grammar.

Q2: Are there services you’d like to start offering or a new category/genre you want to expand into? What are they, and why are you interested in offering them?

For example, maybe you’re a proofreader but want to start offering developmental edits. #StetChat

A1: I currently only offer fiction copy editing for indie authors! I'm trained as a proofreader and copy editor, but I saw that there's too much scope creep with proofreading, so I pulled that service. #StetChat

Hi, my name is Rachel and I'm a freelance copyeditor, proofreader, and developmental editor of TTRPGs, comics, and manga. I'm also the brainstormer in chief for #StetChat

And today we're talking about The Expanse!

[Brief pause]

My apologies, we're talking about expanding our editorial offerings.

Alt: Beltalowda Expanse, I've just put this GIF here for no particular reason. It's certainly not due to recent election results being very, very good.

Or maybe just don’t be that person that corrects people on social media unless it’s a factual thing. There’s a time and a place. And I say this as an editor and proofreader. 😊

And — as always — I have to shill my absolute proudest moment as a proofreader — getting to localize actual Sound Horizon references in 2.5DS

I wish Bluesky would allow edits. I’m terrible proofreader.

Hello Bluesky! 👋 I’m a novelist, editor, and proofreader here to help you polish your manuscript. When I'm not fixing syntax, I'm out skipping rope to clear my head! ✍️👟 #WritingCommunity #Booksky #BetaReaders #BookEditing
What stage is your current manuscript in right now?

as a legal proofreader, yup. reading contracts for 8 hours is a slog.

Ouch. Can get Viking to chop it off?

Good good. 40,000+ on first draft of book five.
When I finish that, final edits of book 4 before proofreader.
Still need to design book cover.
Now, if people just bought them 😂

PERSONAL ANNOUNCEMENT:
Due to budget cuts at English-language website JAPAN Forward, my job as sports editor was eliminated on Oct. 31. After six-and-a-half years of dedicated work for JF, I'm now seeking new opportunities as a reporter, editor, columnist, proofreader.

Still, when I spot a typographical error that has somehow made it into print despite copy-editing, typesetting and proofreading, I feel a tiny, rather guilty satisfaction. Hardly an admirable habit, I know. Somewhere, an author, copy-editor, compositor or proofreader has every reason to groan.

I'm not saying my own book is error-free, cos that's asking for trouble, but I will say that my editor and the proofreader she hired were both pretty meticulous. (Also, the 2 books these examples are from are with BIG publishers, which I'm not.)
