There's a new interview on my blog today - woohoo!

It's part of my 'Meet the Pros' segment and I'm chatting to Proofreader Mark Schultz (wordrefiner). He has some brilliant tips and info, including:
'95% of published books have spelling errors'

MELT: REFRAIN: A 🔞 queer trans horror novel about toxic corporate vampires in love, and other four-letter words. One part Gothic, one part psychological torment; all sex and death.

Everything changes for the worst all the time. What are you going to do about it?

Print run funding now on BackerKit.
MELT: Refrain
The first book in a queer, trans Gothic horror series about toxic corporate vampires reinventing what it means to be alive—to live—and the pieces of themselves they lose along the way.

ANYWAYS if anyone needs a line editor or a proofreader, I am very good. I need work. I want to keep doing what I'm good at and what I enjoy doing and not have to find some BS job that will make me use AI.

Because fuck AI.

What published tests show AI proofreading catches and misses, why fiction is harder, privacy settings for your manuscript, and a safe first-pass method.

anyway- if there's a lesson here, it's "get a sensitivity proofreader when covering subjects like animal cruelty and bigotry for a project like this", since it seems like the other contributors were taken off-guard by that two-page spread as well.

Ouch. Can get Viking to chop it off?

Good good. 40,000+ on first draft of book five.
When I finish that, final edits of book 4 before proofreader.
Still need to design book cover.
Now, if people just bought them 😂

As a professional proofreader, this made me laugh.
I love this letter.

Just a quickie* - This is another example of my perrsona reflecting my real life, since I've done some proofreading, although I think I was better at it (but I feel awkward in other areas)

*Although I could have drawn my catboy writing by her side

I'm not saying my own book is error-free, cos that's asking for trouble, but I will say that my editor and the proofreader she hired were both pretty meticulous. (Also, the 2 books these examples are from are with BIG publishers, which I'm not.)

The grim proofreader

A lot of the work that Karen does editing Designers & Dragons makes me think, "Gosh, I'm glad she's making my writing sound better."

Some of it makes me say, "Jesus Christ, I'm glad she caught that and it didn't go into print."

So, yeah, hire her as an editor or proofreader!

Maybe spell Everest correctly. Apart from that great sentiment. (Proofreader pedant kicking in)
October 31, 2026 at 7:44 PM
That's why you get a proofreader/editor/translator to look over the text.

Especially with English. 😅🐺

Man, the proofreader really sucks😄
November 3, 2026 at 2:05 PM
Even if that's an honest typo, you'd think an editor or proofreader would've caught that.

#writerscoffeeclub 11/1: How much writing are you hoping to accomplish this month?

I plan to integrate all beta reader feedback into my manuscript so that I can hand it over to my proofreader.

Beyond that, I also want to finish all Patreon translations for December, including typesetting - […]
