In California, the state passed a law in 2019 to expand labor protections to gig workers, but some of the delivery apps, along with ride-share companies and others, pushed a ballot proposition Prop22 that would carve themselves out of that law. They spent $ 184 million on lobbying and won.

The United States has fewer labor protections and wage guarantees than most wealthy nations, leaving many workers vulnerable to economic hardship from job loss, reduced hours, or work-related injuries. Based on data from the California Statewide Study of People Experiencing Homelessness (CASPEH), this study shows how income disruptions—through layoffs, unstable gig work, caregiving tied to housing, illness or injury, probation and parole demands, and COVID-19-related impacts—can quickly lead to homelessness when housing costs are high and wages are low.

Well prior to 1976 and then further in 2010 it wasn’t part of the system. You couldn’t do the kind of independent expenditures you could now out in the open or run ads like we had for prop22.

And I think that’s what people truly don’t like. That it’s a feature now.

Sure. And I understand that rolling back to pre2010 or even to 1976 is not going to solve that issue (if that’s even possible). Especially since many unions and orgs use the same new ability to spend for causes we agree with. But one can just look at prop22 in CA and see that it’s a problem 1/2
