I agree that AI is probably capable of better prose than Andy Weir but also I don’t think this says much about the quality of AI prose if you know what I mean

Andy Weir, the author of The Martian and Project Hail Mary, has spoken out about AI, saying, "If I give you a hammer, you can build a house or you can murder someone. It's not the tool that's the issue; it's the user." https://bit.ly/4iUN2SN

I say this as person who cares a lot about prose and who wishes that romancelandia would engage more deeply with the prose in books. But this kind of hierarchy is really, really, really not it.

A+ prose. I feel like I was there…

Windowpane prose to reach a ~wider readership~

Please use adverbs and semicolons and ten-dollar vocab words. Please make your prose prettier. Please play with sentence structure and POV and narration. I want fewer novels that read like screenplays written for middleschoolers.

I don't want to be egotistical, but they should have SOME standards for prose. I don't think i'm the best at prose construction, but I'm better than "like tentacles, like tentacles"

Gillian Flynn writes really good prose for such a hyper-commercial author, wow.

It's only an underserved audience if the audience you're serving is comically bad at reading. "Rich people are evil and deserve to die" is the thesis of just so. much. genre fiction.

You can write a "no subtext" version better than this. I have some on my book shelves. Bad prose is just bad prose.

like fuck I don't think I'm a particularly good writer and my prose is better than this do people not have standards??
November 3, 2026 at 6:51 PM
in case anyone wonders why my prose is Like That
every time i think i'm getting better at writing i realise i've just used the word "little" three times in two sentences. humbling

Andy demonstrating the grasp of metaphor i'd expect of him having read his prose.

I can even forgive "that been peeled open", god knows I occasionally a word myself, and it's self pub. It's the mixed metaphors, the awkward prose that gives us no vibes, just an awkward attempt to describe a photograph we can't see. A room standing up to its ankles in water.

this holy fuck, oai somehow made it even WORSE by making gpt put each sentence on a separate paragraph too, i feel like llm prose is somehow getting even worse
can they kill whatever neuron causes LLMs to write in short punchy witty sentences

Reading some Derrida ... when I was in my first MA program in Comparative Literature, and some of my teachers thought I was bad at writing (prose), I have to say in my defense that I was reading Derrida, who was either a prose poet or a raving lunatic, but cannot be accused of writing clearly.

I just assume that when I keep hearing about a book against my will, the prose is going to be absolute dogshit and I haven't been wrong yet.
