#Psylloidea
Today, the USDA lost experts in Psylloidea, Thysanoptera, Cerambycidae, Hymenoptera, Pseudococcidae, and Malacology. This is a devastating loss of expertise, occuring without warning. Their union's official statement on the issue can be found here: aginspectors.org/2-14-2025-a-... #entomology 🧪

This is a psyllid or jumping plant louse, an aphid-size, sap-feeding bug (superfamily Psylloidea). Not sure why the sexy-dance - maybe it’s sending out pheromones, or maybe it’s just gotta shake that groove thing because it knows it’s #InverteFest 🐙🌿💃🕺

A creature in process

Psylloidea (sorta like if an aphid and a planthopper made babies while a bark louse watched)

Hey Friends

Sigh–It’s been a life

Have you heard of the Sandwich Generation? GenX smashed between the needs/cares/concerns of Boomer parents & Millennial kids? Bonus uncertainty about wtf is going on professionally & the fuckery of the greater county beyond.

We’re all so tired.

Truly as “snug as a bug in a rug.”

A Psyllidae, a Hemiptera -True Bug- and informally known as Jumping Plant Lice, on the Spring fuzz of a pussy willow (Salix) catkin.

Sternorryncha as a group show a fascinating set of shared traits: flattened, plant feeding forms with defensive wax. Whitefly puparia are immobile and fused to the plant. Psyllids retain mobility but share traits like wax production for defense. #entomology #Hemiptera 🧪 #Aleyrodidae #Psylloidea

Pachypsylla sp. on hackberry, likely P. celtidisvesicula. So small the hackberry’s trichomes look like giant hairs next to them. Some people prefer to call them Jumping Plant Lice. I think we should just call them JPL.

For the paramere you need a good side view - when alive the wings are usually held over the body but with a good picture or potentially a lens you can see them, you are looking for shape, size relative to the proctored and if there is a denticle (small black hook at the top).

I can very much recommend common characters people miss in Psylloidea and Thysanoptera. You'll need good images of genitalia and in thrips probably antennae. That would make this a HUGE tool for people.

P. fraxini is probably very common, but I currently only accept records as P. fraxini s.s. based on the male parameres. The reason is that I am not convinced by the wing diagrams in the RES handbook. Arguably your wing looks more like distinguenda, but gen detting shows fraxini looks like that.

Psylla carpinicola on American hornbeam. #Psyllids are normally hard to ID, but this one is easy since it is the only one known to use this plant. #Psylloidea feed and reproduce on very narrow hosts. Co-evolved and dependent, but some become devastating pests. 🌿 #bugsky #虫 #inverteFest #entomology
